————————————————————————— Episode 1.5: We are Adam. ————————————————————————— The barrier between planet Earth and the apocalypse is currently being reinforced by a wall of muscular mucus. The deep grey influenced shades of brown are only occasionally interrupted by a bright bile-like yellow glow bubbling underneath a thin layer of translucent bio-sludge. Denise stares in shock, but her mind makes no rush to recall any multitude of horror films or medical dramas that would provoke something resembling a similar image to the alien form before her. Instead, her mind replays memories of awkward arguments, bonding over the many ways one could eat chickpeas, and the moment in which the eldritch horror before her said that she was the only member of her species he could trust. Pillars of anonymous flesh build themselves across the interior of the Slam Pow, taking little effort in removing the zombies from the survivors' field of view. Jane is already at a loss for words before seeing the putrid substance she’s been led to believe is a picky drinker slowly sculpt an oval-shaped barrier around her and her two saviours. The spectacle of the construction is cut short as translucent, squirm-inducing, organic rubber fashions itself into an egg-shaped tent imprisoning her. An irrational yet convincing instinct has Jane run over to the edge of the yellow-tinted womb she found herself in. “Get us out of here! You monster! What the fuck are you doing!” She cries as she pushes and stretches on the thin jelly that contained her. “Oi! Unless you got us another plan that doesn’t end in certain death, he’s on our side!” Tom shouts as her progress is swiftly undone by the walls regaining form. There is no sense of assertiveness or confidence in his voice, just fear for a different outcome. “Yeah, let’s just comply with our hellspawn captor! What next? Is he just following orders?” The loaded attack acts as the first blow in a hollow and irrational trading of insults until Denise puts her two cents in. “Why wouldn’t Adam be on our side?” She posits. Drawing unreadable looks from the other two. As their cage continues its relentless quest to kill Charles Darwin a second time, Tom simply nods, sitting down on the admittedly very sticky floor. Jane maintains her hesitation the strongest before looking to a notably large gunk on the floor and seeing within it a jagged reminder of her morally assorted arsenal. She exhales. “I sure hope you’re right, Denise,” she looks up at the shell of mystery that she may have to call home now, “because I’m not recording my final journal entry in front of you two.” She uses the punchline as emotional stock, diluting the fear that she had no rational reason to stop consuming her. The sentient substance continues its growth across the establishment, eventually reaching the upper floor and reinforcing the break room walls. The thudding and slithering from outside was enough to alarm an already anxious Kenny, who was still anticipating the four adventurers to beam in with Jane any minute now. The spectacle continued, drawing attention from even a few late-night campus dwellers outside the store. Despite its almost excrement-like appearance, there is an obvious effort to contain zombies in cages made of overgrown keratin, all of which are then quickly detached from the central mass defining the event. The prisoners had come to an odd sense of peace by now. All three of them threw away all caution and basic hygiene to sit on the wet, sticky floor of their cellular cell. Denise is the first to notice. “He stopped?” The observation is met with confused grunts from her fellow inmates, and then agreement. The heavy sloshing and squashing that defined the white noise of their predicament had come to a halt. Before another comment is made, the organism resumes its metamorphosis. The sewage-esque matter that formed the foundation of the structure hardened into something that much more resembled tree bark. Complementary to that, sm
