Chapter 8 I finally stopped running when the sun was setting. Feeling safe enough, but also exhausted, I made camp and hunkered down for the night. My interface had seemingly gone back to normal; no more strange messages appeared. Whatever that thing was, I absolutely wanted no part of it. Hopefully Crank believes me when I tell him I found it. The journey back to Larkinge was relatively uneventful. I passed by the dungeon on the way, but I stuck to the outskirts just in case whatever was animating those skeletons decided to stop by to check on them. I didn’t see anything unusual, though. It took a few days, but the compass kept me in the right direction. I ended up having some extra food that I didn’t eat, so I returned those as well as the other supplies Crank lent me. As I told him about my adventure, and of the creature I found and the mysterious gem, he looked off into the distance, towards where I had been. “Aye, thank ya. The beast must’a been but a baby when I saw it all those years ago. I can finally rest…” Then he sat down in a chair on the patio and closed his eyes. After waiting probably longer than I should have, it finally occurred to me that he might have been talking about a “final” rest. I walked over and put a hand on his shoulder and said, “Crank?” “AH!” He yelped as his eyes shot open and almost jumped out of his chair, “Let an old man get some sleep, would ya?!” It startled me, but I just sighed and went inside to my room. The notifications rang out. ›Quest Complete: The Wacky Old Fool of the Peak‹ ›You gained 703 experience points‹ ›Your level has increased to 5‹ ›You have unlocked Class Selection‹ ›You have earned the title: Novice Adventurer‹ Going in order, completing the quest seemed to have given me a bunch of experience, enough to essentially take me from the beginning of level 4 to a bit past level 5. I put my stat points into strength and dexterity again. The class selection was the most exciting for me. In all the stories I’ve read about VRMMO’s or system based literature, the main character usually gets a rare class. I don’t necessarily expect that to be the case for me, but I think I’ve done quite a lot in the game so far. I opened the selection menu. ›Please select a class‹ ›Swordsman (common) ›Warrior (common) ›Knight (common) Brushing aside my disappointment for not getting a rarer class, there is actually some information to glean. The fact that it’s listing the rarity of the class proves that there are rare classes within the game. Perhaps the intention is to give people simple classes to start and then offer them more or evolutionary choices later on. The next thing is that it seems to take your stats, skills, or acts within the game into account when providing the options. Or maybe it takes everything into account, although that would require a lot of processing power. Either way, I got choices that are tailored to me it would seem. They don’t offer any descriptions or explanation as to what the classes are or what they provide, just the names themselves. Realistically, while it might be worth considering the other options, I’ve already made up my mind. I chose Swordsman. ›Class selected: Swordsman‹ I got another notification, this time a tutorial. It opened my main menu and I watched as the “Stats” button and “Skills” combined into a “Profile” button. Within the profile was my stats, skills, class, as well as a slot for my title. Taking advantage of the opportunity, I clicked it and was prompted with all my earned titles, of which I only had one currently. The “Novice Adventurer” title provides a five percent boost to all skill experience gain. I happily equipped it. I would imagine titles being pretty powerful, if you get some good ones. I do wonder if there will be unique titles given to only specific players, but I doubt anyone has gotten those yet, if they exist. Pressing on my class, a pop up notification opens. ›Swordsman‹ ›An adept swordsman who engages foes in close quarters com
