1.35 Azazel Chapter 35 “We will be doing everything we can to assist the authorities in tracking down whoever was responsible for these acts,” Barry said into the microphone in front of him. Beside him, Clara Reedtz stood stoically with an arm in a sling. “The lost in trust for Rift Hunters over this tragedy, is something we will need to shoulder,” Barry continued, “Paragon Guild hopes to lead the way to gaining the good will of the world once more.” A faint click sounded in the room, and the T.V. changed channels. The screen showed a different news cast, this one international, as a tall woman stood in front of a lectern of her own. She wore a finely woven lehenga choli of black and green with golden stitching. Her shoulders were squared as she looked directly into the camera. English text scrolled by at the bottom of the screen as the woman talked. “Legendary Hunter Divya Gupta condemns the recent assassinations in the New States Union. Gupta vows to give an offered hand to the Guilds and authorities within the West to establish peace between regions.” Another click. A well muscled man in a white suit, his dark brown eyes wide with passion as he spoke appeared next. Again text scrolled by, “Legendary Hunter Segun vows not to let Africa fall into the disrepair shown by the western world, and further—” Click “Jeon, Korea’s #1 Top S-Class Hunter makes a public statem—” Click “Europe’s Legendary Fredric—” Click Click Gerard Davis set the remote down on the table in front of him. The large corporate meeting room was almost dead silent as he turned his chair back towards the group that had filed themselves inside the elongated glass cube. “How did the job on Congresswoman Reedtz fail?” He said at last, the words barely a whisper, but the room was silent enough that everyone heard him. There was a shuffling of bodies, a few nervous gulps, but no one answered. “Well?” Eyes roamed about, searching for someone to pick up and throw under the bus that was the Mythic Tier Lightning Mage. Eventually, one brave soul did actually answer, Richard. “It appeared that someone had tipped her off,” he said. Gerard turned to him, lightning literally crackling in his eyes, “We have a mole then?” “It appears so,” Richard said flatly. Gerard’s attempt at intimidation failed to take full effect on Richard. Adam had taken care to use his [Aura Mastery] to train his friend against the pressure of other high tier Hunters. Adam trusted Richard, to a degree, and he couldn’t have him swayed by greed, or fear. He made sure that Richard was not wanting for either. Though he didn’t know, and neither did I yet, that there was no mole inside ‘Inevitability Guild’, at least no mole besides Richard. Reedtz and her staff had survived for other reasons, the first being that no one outside her staff, besides myself, knew that she also was a high tier hunter. That sling she wore was entirely for show, a ruse. But also, she was tipped off. Just not be anyone within Gerard’s Guild. But that’s something not important right now. Gerard slapped the T.V. remote, sending it crashing into the glass window, cracking the surface from top to bottom. “Well go figure out who it is! And I want new intel reports on the impact of our last mission log. As well, touch back in with our feelers and runners, see if they have heard anything regarding possible upcoming targets.” He turned back to the T.V., now on mute, the screen still showing a press report from the European Union. “You all may go. Now!” He said without even looking back. The room’s inhabitants all quickly shuffled to their feet and penguin waddled their way out of the meeting room in a cluster. All except Gerard, and one other person who sat at the opposite end of the table. I waited patiently for Gerard to notice that I was still in the room. I had nowhere else to be that day, so I wasn’t exactly wasting time or anything. And the longer it took for him to notice I was there, the funnier it would be, really. Oh, I should
