Chapter 61 “There’s nothing that you need to do, other than stay alert. And please try to enjoy yourself, will you?” Barry said as the three of us walked through the halls toward the dining room. “Why do you always ask me to do things you know I don’t want to do?” I asked. “True, you know that he doesn’t like these events, Barry. And Adam would much rather suffer than ever enjoy a good dinner among friends,” Norton chuckled. I rolled my eyes, but didn’t argue. Being a bit antisocial was always my weakness when it came to maintaining friendships and relationships. I liked keeping people at a distance, even more so the people I was lying to on a daily basis. There was a need to return to being slightly… vulnerable and open up more. Not as much as I did with Richard, not nearly as much as that, but at least a bit more than I was lately. “It’s a gathering of friends, so we should look at it as such. Build as many connections as possible. I’m slightly surprised you didn’t talk more with Divya and Kaguya at the museum, but do try to do that tonight, okay?” Barry fidgeted slightly with his tie as he walked. It looked like the idea of having to talk with the two women also made him nervous, and he was happily pawning that responsibility onto me, the asshole. Still, I didn’t blame him; I’d avoid it if I could. Hell, I already had once, but it seemed I couldn’t run away from them forever. “I’ll give it a shot, but I can’t guarantee you anything. Those two are scary.” “Scary, to you? Can’t you just stealth away and hide if things go bad?” Norton asked. I chuckled. “Hide from those two, no way.” I shook my head as we took a turn down another hallway. “You can’t run from a tiger and a dragon. Just—“ My feet came to stop for a moment, and I blinked. My eyes wandered about as a feeling of deja vu went over me. Like I had been walking through my apartment and suddenly forgot what I was doing. “...You can just play dead and hope they get bored,” I said, continuing on. Barry clasped me on the shoulder as he walked beside me. “Playing dead might be the best call.” The dining room doors were already open as we neared, strolling into the vast room already containing a long carved wooden table set with rather nice-looking table placements. The table was larger than I anticipated, but it made sense. There were a lot of guests expected that night, some of whom were already there, talking in small groups. Off to the right were the very people we had just been talking about. Kaguya and Divya, the two women now wearing more lavish dresses than earlier in the day. Next to them was a rather tall black man wearing a charcoal colored suit. His facial expression was intense, and I could see tiny scars threading his skin around his chin and the left side of his jaw. He held himself casually, but his continuance was strong. Through my skill I saw his aura encompassing his body in the shape of a glittering light blue sword. The weapon wasn’t real, but it felt like I could accidentally cut my eyeballs on it just by looking at the man at the wrong angle. I knew him instantly as Ibrahim Segun, the Legendary Hunter from Nigeria. He was known to be a one-man army, capable of using any weapon with immense skill and power. The exact details of his class weren’t public knowledge, and the man was rather tight-lipped about a lot of things. Standing next to Segun was a woman he didn’t quite know, but I had received the dossier on her. Her name was Ngozi, no known last name. A Mythic Tier Hunter that was basically the, me, to Ibrahim’s Barry. Ibrahim’s right hand and confidant. She spoke quietly with Divya as Ibriham chatted with Kaguya. My eyes moved on to the next group and— The other side of the room contained a face that I knew rather well, one that belonged to a man who had tried to kill me not too long ago. General Nieve, Forgeborn Titan. The officer was invited to the gathering by virtue of his Hunter status, and not because of his occupation. Nieve was standing nex
