1.47 Luring Chapter 47 Going about the task of planning a murder is always a rather surreal sort of experience. I can tell you it’s not like how the media portrays it. As it is, for one, a bit bland. Mostly coming down to a bunch of what ifs and logistical nightmares. But also, it’s almost entirely solemn and un-emotional. The fact one is figuring out how to end the actual life of another person makes the entire process introspective in that you realize just how mortal you are yourself. I’d like to point out that all of these factors are cranked up to the maximum when you happen to be planning your own murder. Which was exactly the task I had to perform as I sat with Gerard, Barry and General Nieve making plans. Only I knew that last bit of information, but it didn’t make the task any less morose. Granted, as I was one of the conspirators planning my death, I would be in the best possible position to avoid it. So there was a silver lining to the dark murder stormcloud. When Gerard and Nieve eventually filed out of the office, promising to continue communications over the next couple days, Barry and I were left alone. “Are you going to go along with this?” I asked him seconds after the doors were shut. Barry sighed and sank back into the couch seat behind him. He looked dazed, large bags already formed under his eyes from the sleepless night of murder plotting. At the time, he looked far less like a holy paladin hero and more like a middle-class paralegal returning home from a day of massive over-tasking. “I don’t know,” he said eventually. “I hate the idea of not giving this guy a chance. But he’s already gone too far already. If what Gerard said is true, I don’t see how he can be convinced to work with us.” “So you are going to trust Gerard and Nieve on this? I would be a very bad friend if I didn’t remind you of Lucilla’s prophecy regarding myself and this Noah Lenkov ever meeting in person. I don’t think I can be there to help you on this one.” I said earnestly. If they wanted Noah to show up, then Adam Pierce sure as hell couldn’t be around. Luckily, Lucilla’s looming warning still gave me the perfect excuse for the Bruce Wayne paradox that would surely pop up eventually. “I know,” Barry threw up his hands, “We will need you here handling the guild while I’m gone anyway. Even if, and I mean if, we kill Noah then we will still have to clear the dungeon to get back. That can mean a day or two if luck isn’t on our side. Paragon can’t have its chain of command disrupted for that long.” “Then I stay here, while you run off by yourself directly towards a self-described mass murderer? You think I’m just going to let you do that?” He shook his head, “It’s what has to be done, Adam. Lucilla made it clear, just like you said, if you come with us, then Earth will be doomed far more than it already is. And besides, I don’t want to put a friend in needless danger anyway. Noah is a Legendary Hunter, you’re strong Adam, but Epic classes just can’t compare.” Oh I know, that’s why I’m trying to dissuade you, damn fool. I huffed softly but didn’t argue further. I didn’t expect things to go so far that Barry would call me a friend and worry about me. It was kinda nice, knowing someone other than my parents worried about me safety. Good ol’ Barry. “Well, I don’t have to like this crazy ass plan.” “You’ve made that quite clear already,” he smiled. “Keep me informed… You all can’t plan a fight worth shit, so I will help you nail down the details on the strategy,” I said genuinely. I’d very much like to know every last part of such a plan. Almost to the point that my life depended on. Once I left Paragon HQ, I had to make a much different choice than Barry and the others. I had to figure out how I was going to react to all this, as Noah. I could go after Gerard now and kill him, cut this little plot down at the knees right away. But my gut told me that would be a mistake somehow. I could just not show up when they tried to spring the trap. But I
