1.55 Dark Truths, White Lies Chapter 55 My mind was cool and collected as I watched the carnage unfold down below me. Bodies fell and blood pooled as the two sides went at each other. It wasn’t long until the smell that Huwett had been talking about before reached me. It was a stink that reminded me of the goblin settlements, a mixture of piss and shit, but also tinged with the tang of copper as the blood spilled added its own aroma to the mix. Once the center battalions were in the thick of it, things began to unfold just as Barry had anticipated, with the Forestarians moving to attack the flank, and being caught in the overrun of the cavalry charge that happened shortly after. The mounted rhino beasts trampled and broke the bodies of their foes underfoot, all while their riders skewered those who managed to put up a resistance on their long lances. The beasts turned inward then and began pressing the middle. Lines began to collapse shortly after, meaning that they were winning the battle by all metrics. But that didn’t last for long. The flank was still open for attack now that the cavalry charge had moved on, and the Forestrains had their own tricks up their sleeves. Their own mounted regiment was on horse sized reptilian beasts, as opposed to the hulking rhinos of the Burlianites, so they had a substantial mobility difference even if their power was lacking. The lizard mounted troops dove into the unprotected side of their allies, and began a heated destruction of the soldiers. Things did not look good, everything had swung in the favor of their enemy in a matter of minutes. A sudden flare shot from the opposite ridge, rising high into the sky. The officers next to me shifted, scanning the field for a change that such a flare would signal. They didn’t know what the Burlianites were planning, and they suspected some formation shift or secret weapon. And they were right. But they were looking in the wrong place. That secret weapon was me, and I already had my new Thanatarch’sEdge, in the form of a one handed sword, poised at the Forestarian general’s throat. [General Gur Harzar, Lvl 11 – Marked to Die] I didn’t need the weakpoint of my skill’s tether attachment to tell me where to strike. When it came to humanoid enemies, the easiest way to kill was always the same. Remove the head. General Harzar’s head fell to the dirt just as his body leaned the opposite way. He was dead before he, or any of the surrounding officers, knew what was happening. As soon as the kill notification popped up I had already shifted my [Marked to Die] skill and was cycling my mana in a different pattern, my stealth skill no longer necessary. [Aura Mastery] blasted out around me, buffeting every fighter within a hundred feet on the ridge. It broadcast my position, but it also stunned them from the sudden powerful presence of my aura. My sword flashed, and another officer was killed instantly. Blood spilled from his neck and rose into the air, spinning into elongated projectiles above my shoulders. Mana burst from my boots as I launched myself to the side in a strafe. A collection of spells, fire, lightning, raw mana bolts and a few arrows all assaulted the space I had been. I launched myself even faster, covering distance at a speed that blurred my vision and pressed against my body with wind resistance and the sheer strain of overcoming my own inertia. That same momentum helped my blade cut through the hardened leather armor of my next target, cutting them into two pieces as I passed. My gathered blood bullets were launched in the same moment, catching two more of the officers in the chest, burrowing holes through their torso, and bursting through the other side. Their blood was added to my new arsenal, as four new blood projectiles began to spin up next to me. With the restriction band equipped, it took longer to control and harden the blood, and it was more difficult to bring it up to speed. But my intelligence stat and my practice with controllin
