1.37 Mixed Visions Chapter 37 As it turned out, finding Lucilla was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Once she told me where she was, I left Richard and rushed across the city without a second thought. “I am here sitting with the Head of Paragon Guild in his office,” she had said, so plainly, so flatly, as if it was a completely normal thing right after essentially threatening me just moments before. How did she know? Did I mess up somewhere? Was there something on the surveillance in the Cheese Caves that I didn’t realize I gave away? Fuck! Fuck! At this point, driving in the city traffic was far slower than simply running to the Guild headquarters myself. It was only a few miles at most, and with my dexterity, I could take alleyways, and over bumper to bumper traffic with ease. Just like the greatest hero of all time, I could leap somewhat small buildings, albeit with a running start. Will I have to kill her? My mind raced just as fast as my legs. I can break in as Noah and assassinate her. It should be easy enough, but getting away after would be difficult, especially with Barry and the others being close by. I zigzagged through a crowd at an intersection, the wind buffeting each person I passed by. My distracted thoughts almost had me clipped by a passing car that decided yellow-light rules still applied to the first second of a red-light too. Dick. Then the sudden change in direction I had to do had me headed straight on toward a stall on the side of the street where a man was selling vegetables, exclusively cabbages. With a jump and an expert maneuver on my end, I barely missed the stall, knocking over only two leafy heads as I passed. “My cabbages!” an old man yelled behind me. I carried on. If I kill her fast enough and begin my escape, can I get out of sight, deactivate the mask and turn back to show up as Adam heading into the building? It was possible, but extremely risky as there were cameras everywhere and I had to make sure none one saw me switching identities. Fuck! I was minutes away then, still sprinting down the streets toward what might be my whole plan crumbling down around me early. I need to go in as Adam, and play it cool. Don’t be suspicious at all. The best she has is some flimsy logic and a hunch, surely. I can deny everything, and then be extra careful from then on. Maybe give the mask to Ricahrd and have him play Noah for a bit? The headquarters building loomed ahead just around the corner. I slowed my pace, returning to a normal walking speed. Running in at superhuman speed was rather antithetical to the playing-it-cool plan. My feet touched the floor inside the Paragon Guild lobby eight minutes after I hung up the call with Lucilla. I thought about the distance and smiled to myself. A one minute mile had to be the new world record, surely no one had a higher dexterity than me yet. “Afternoon Mr. Pierce,” the man at the reception desk called out to me as I passed. I waved to him and flashed a smile before strolling through the security gate by tapping a plastic card from my wallet against the frame. “Is Barry in yet?” I called over my shoulder. “He’s taking a meeting in his office I think,” the receptionist, Emrin, yelled back. That confirmed he was here and someone was with him at least. Lucilla could have been lying, trying to get me to react, but it seemed she was telling the truth. I entered the elevator and pressed the button for the top floor. Merely two minutes later, I was opening up the door to Barry’s office, and sure enough, he was sitting on the couch in the seating area, with someone sitting in the armchair opposite him. Her back was to the doorway, so I couldn’t see her face as I entered, but I still recognized the figure as Lucilla from her hair and the arm and leg I could see poking from the side of the chair. What was new, though, was what I saw with my [Aura mastery]. Barry still shone brightly, his presence a twenty foot column of power like fire crackling towards the heav
