1.38 Beacon of Hope Chapter 38 “You’re the strongest Hunter in the world, because of your ability?” I asked. Barry nodded, still flashing his carefree smile, as if he was saying he bought some candy at the grocery store, and not that he was the strongest person alive. And he seemed sincere about it, too, which was even more infuriating. I closed my eyes, pinching at the bridge of my nose, “Okay Barry, what’s your class ability?” When I looked back up, I swear his eyes were sparkling, like he was excited that I had asked him despite the fact it was him who brought it up. I had to remind myself that Barry was barely eighteen, and that he’d maybe grow out of it. He didn’t. “It’s called ‘Beacon of Hope’,” he said. “It's a bit hard to explain, but basically it calculates how much faith or hope people have in me and gives me extra stats based on that value.” “It gives you extra stats?!” I nearly yelled that part. Barry cocked his head at me, and I quickly cleared my throat and reset my composure. “Sorry, please, explain.” “Again, it's complicated in how it calculates it all. But yeah, the more people who have faith in me, trust me, the higher the boost is,” he confirmed. It was slightly annoying that Barry didn’t know the intricacies behind his ability. But, I also didn’t know all the secrets behind my class ability either, so I couldn’t exactly hold it against him. I’d definitely be the cicada calling the cricket noisy. Or something like that. What was far more than slightly annoying, was realizing my class ability wasn't the only one that gave me extra stat points. I had spent most of the last few weeks developing my plans around the thought I was the only Hunter with such inflated stats. If there were other Hunters with stats as high as mine, other Legendary Class Hunters like Barry, then my plans would need to be changed. “What, what are your stats at right now Barry?” “Hmmm, looks like the boost right now adds fifteen points to every stat. Looks like it’s gone up since the press conference. That’s like twelve levels worth of stats,” Barry tapped at the air as he looked at his status. His ability increases his stats based on public perception, and he’s positioned himself as a Guild Leader and Hero, doing press conferences and rubbing shoulders with congresswomen. Is Barry actually a genius? If I had such an ability, I thought about what I’d do, and came to the conclusion that I’d be doing practically the same things as Barry. He was doing precisely what will make him stronger, all while continuing to push his goal of peace and cooperation. Exactly like me. I thought. Doing what will make me stronger while continuing to push my goal. “Wow, twelve levels worth of stats? Even counting the free points?” “Nah, I didn’t count those. Everyone gets those. But like I said, I think I’m the strongest Hunter right now, my strength is in the seventies with my gear,” Barry activated his inventory, materializing his armor. So he gets six stats per level from his class. Still less than my eight. That’s the difference in Class Tiers I suppose. And my ability certainly has allowed me to get far more stats than just fifteen in each. I’m still much stronger. Confirmed in my mind. “Okay, you’re certainly way stronger than a Mythic or Epic Class Hunter. But there are other Legendary Classes out there, they probably have really strong abilities too. Including this Azazel guy. Lucilla, what do you see? Can Barry win a fight against this guy?” I turned back to the prophet sitting in the armchair just a few feet away. “I see… tragedy, death. A breaking of friendship, and betrayal. Your body, broken on the altar of sacrifice. You… die,” her eyes swirled with light as she spoke, possibly using her ability to see the future. “See? You can’t do this Barry, if you fight him, you’ll die,” I pressed the paladin more. I didn’t mention the broken friendship or betrayal part. I certainly knew what that meant, but I wasn’t interested in having either of them dive i
