Chapter 60 Barry, Norton and I stood out on the tarmac in front of the private jet, looking back towards the airport terminal. Barry was waving back at the gathered crowd that had come to see us off before our travel over into Europe. Huwett, Dupree, and Vasquez were there, as well as the captains of the paragon Hunter teams. There was also Natalya, and Clara, each waving back to Barry. I side-eyed him suspiciously, wondering idly if he had another secret skill revolving around Harem creation. The Paladin already seemed to have the eye of the two Hunters, and they weren’t alone. Standing in and among those already stated were various other people. Civilians, all supporters of Barry or Paragon Guild in general. There had to be dozens upon dozens of them, all cheering, waving, jumping up and down while holding signs with flashing holo-images or short videos. Sure is more than I expected. Even if one ignored the many news teams, there must have been a couple hundred people all there to see us off. Barry nudged me with his elbow, and grunted. I put on a well practiced smile and waved as well, and the crowd grew even louder. I sighed internally at that. “I know you already have had your fill of things like this. The show of it all,” Barry whispered through his smile. “From when you were younger.” “Yeah.” I wasn’t sure how Barry knew about all that, but I had guessed Clara insisted on a background check of me, just to be safe. And Barry seemed to know a lot about every member of Paragon, even the new recruits coming in each day. “But honestly,” the paladin went on. “This is why we are doing this, Adam. These people believe in us, look up to us. Its not necessarily fair, we just happened to be the people who stumbled into, or got pushed into Tutorials when this began. We are no more important than any of those civilians cheering us on.” “Mmm?” “We are fighting, dungeon diving, and looting, getting to fulfill a gamer’s dream. But its serious, Azazel is insane, but he’s right about one thing, our enemy is the Dungeons, and this System. We fight against them so that those people—“ He continued to smile and wave at the crowd. “Can keep living as normal and safe a live as possible. Rest their heads at night and not wonder who will be protecting them from the monsters. Those are all family, friends, loved ones, and we’d protect all of them if they were our own parents, nieces, nephews, sisters… brothers.” He looked at me on that last one. I knew what he was saying. Yes, if Alex was still alive, and he was a civilian, just like with my parents, I’d be fighting to make sure that he was safe. Barry was exactly right, that was precisely what we fought for, and why we did what we did. And it was also why I did what I did. What Azazel did. Even if everyone hated me for it. I looked back out at the smiling crowd, my eyes finding a young man with short dark hair. I tried to imagine that young man as Alex. A slight smile, soft green eyes, a slightly crooked canine that had been punched loose during one of our highschool martial arts tournaments… I looked away. “Understood, let’s get to it then. Make sure these people can sleep soundly,” I said as I began taking the short staircase into the aircraft. Barry and Norton stayed a few more seconds before following in after me. I had already claimed a seat and Norton patted my shoulder as he squeezed past me. Barry took the seat on the other side of the short aisle as me. “You alright?” he asked. “I’m good, thank you.” He eyed me once more and nodded. “Alright, then, lets get this show on the road.” The aircraft taxied out and was in the air in a matter of minutes, its course set for Switzerland, Geneva. The System announcement regarding the Tournament event had put a ticking clock on quite a few things, internationally and otherwise. It wasn’t a whole lot of time to prepare, as I was sure everyone wanted to do. We didn’t know what this event would mean, if a new portal would arrive, if the System would c
