1.42 Waves Chapter 42 My hands and arms ached from strain prolonged use, and I could even feel my legs starting to get sore from jumping and running about in the sands. But still, I couldn't stop, there was more to do, more to kill, and I couldn’t slow down. [You Have Slain Stone-Fringed Salamander - Lvl 6] Another of the lizard beasts fell back, my sword sliding free of its neck. Blood leaked everywhere from the wound and pooled into the already rust-colored mud that was starting to form around me. There was just too much blood soaking the ground, making movement in the area even more nightmareish. I jumped backward as a sand crab slammed its large claw into the ground where I had been standing. My left hand whipped out, bringing my sword up to intercept the follow-up attack when the crab realized he hadn’t squished me. With my right hand I focused blood into my chosen ‘blood bullet’ form—patent pending—and spun it up before launching the projectile behind me. The bullet struck the back of the head of another salamander that was trying to scale the wall of Fitzgrand. Its head jerked as the attack tore a fist sized hole through its skull, dropping it to the ground. A surprised Tikkari, with spear in hand, waved their weapon at me and shouted. But I couldn’t hear whatever he had said, and I didn’t care. The crab was back at me again already. I kicked out at one of its legs, snapping it cleanly beneath my foot. The beast teetered a moment, and I stabbed down into the top of its body before sending a focused surge of mana through its insides. It slumped into the muddy slush right after. [You Have Slain Stone-Fringed Salamander - Lvl 4] [You Have Slain Hulking Sand Crab - Lvl 4] I pulled my sword out and launched off of the crab’s corpse like a vaulting platform. I landed onto the top of another crab nearby and kicked downward, this time my foot sank clean through the chitin and I had to wriggle my limb free to stand back up, which was further hampered by the crab’s erratic throes. [You Have Slain Hulking Sand Crab - Lvl 5] A scorpion became my next target, and I jumped from crab platform #2 to meet it. None of the beasts in the horde were particularly strong. The highest level among them looked to be level six. Yet, there was a quality in quantity to itself. I just couldn’t be everywhere all at once, even with my bloated physical stats. My skills helped somewhat, letting me add some range to my sword by coating it with a sharp-edged mana barrier. Or, like with the last salamander, [Blood Manipulation] letting me add a ranged attack to my repertoire. This let me catch some of the beasts that made their way past me. But I couldn’t get all of them. Kliktik and the other guards, luckily, didn’t follow my demands to leave it all to me, and were at the walls to catch the beasts I simply couldn't get to fast enough. I had hoped the horde would converge on me, as the closest prey available. But it looked like the System had them see the settlement as their main focus. So I had to constantly play catch up and try to cut off their approach. Two more blood bullets cracked through the bodies of nearby scorpions as I sliced into the tail of a third. The stingers on the beasts were quite fast, and their sharp points were no joke, ending in long foot long barbs that almost seemed to freely leak venom. I hadn’t been stung by one yet, and I didn’t ever plan to. With a swift thrust, I pierced the face of the now tail-less scorpion and twisted the hilt, hard. The beast didn’t even get to scream before its body and life gave out. Another silver orb came to float above the corpse, adding to the now large collection that scattered the battlefield. I looked around, finding that there weren’t any more monsters in front of me. I turned around, seething that two crabs had managed to slide past. I dashed back toward the wall, spinning up two new blood bullets as I ran. Even with my speed, I knew I wouldn't reach the monsters before they got to the wall, th
