Chapter 30: A Seal Broken by the Kiss of Night Zuldoor knelt in front of his liege’s throne. The zombie king in front of him radiated ethereal death. Blue flames poured from his cracked, white skin. The king was covered in ancient black robes with blue stitching, and a crown of pearly blue adorned his head. The king tapped his black staff against the stone floor next to his throne, his voice coming out deep and otherworldly. “So...Why have you come back to me Zuldoor?” Zuldoor didn’t answer immediately. He looked up from his kneeling position and acknowledged mentally how pathetic he seemed. He was without halberd, and his armor was torn to bits. All of his undead companions were wiped out, and he was entirely alone. Perhaps in days of old, Zuldoor would be stricken with fear, but his undead permanence had washed those feelings away long ago. “My Liege, My Great King Kazaldoor, death is not enough for me.” King Kazaldoor nodded. “It’s true. Doing nothing, returning to me, and then groveling is worthless. Death is too light for you, even as we are undead. Though, that is not the question I asked. I want to know why you’ve come back to me. Surely, being reduced to nothing would have been better.” “I have only saved myself as a measure of caution for you, My Liege. An anomaly showed up at this moment in time.” The king tapped his staff against the ground. “An anomaly, you say? I saw it, and I understand the situation.” King Kazaldoor lifted his arm, and black figures started forming behind Zuldoor. They rose up like little black blobs. Then they formed into a mass of skeletons, zombies, liches, and wraiths. An entire army rose from within Kazaldoor’s giant throne room. “My Liege?” “Don’t you see, Zuldoor? Now is the time. With someone so powerful on the surface, this gives our conquest meaning. Let the armies of the dead flood the world, and let that woman become our satiation.” Kazaldoor tapped his staff on the ground again, and the army in front of him stomped their feet in unison. The wraiths screeched their approval, and the mass of undead answered their king’s call. King Kazaldoor chuckled. “We will cross the barrier between worlds, and we will lay siege to the land. The witch’s spell has weakened for the last time, and we end this endeavor with a vengeance of the ages. The plane of mortals will once again know of the terror of Kazaldoor, and we will slaughter them. Only in death, will they join the ranks of my army.” Zuldoor’s glowing blue orbs shone in the darkness, mirroring the excitement of his leader. Would he be allowed to walk among their ranks even after his failure? Would the king permit such a thing? The undead’s body boiled with a thirst for revenge. The king grinned. “I know your feelings well, knight. Worry not, you will be given your chance. Only after you set everything right will I allow you to be destroyed.” Zuldoor nodded. “Yes, my liege.” “And this time,” King Kazaldoor said, “I will see to it that none of you sully my good name.” Magic crystallized around the king’s body, and armor started forming over his robes. The pieces of metal were as black as the abyss surrounding the castle, and they were as spiky as the horns of a dragon. The armor wriggled as if living black vines were holding it altogether. King Kazaldoor’s black staff radiated with the might of the entire dead army. Blue flames formed over its crystal, and a giant ring began to form in the air above the army. Zuldoor looked at the performance of Kazaldoor with glistening, fiery blue orbs, but soon he was graced with a look of puzzlement. “But how...my liege?” “In a way, your blunder has led me to breaking the seal. No more words need to be said. Let us speak to the living on the battlefield.” King Kazaldoor pointed his staff towards the ring, and a large blue fireball formed at the tip. “The flames of purgatory will bring all of them to me. [Great Purging Flame]!” The blue fire rushed forwards and went straight through the portal. An explosio
