The office lights buzzed over Jin Tae's head; he had gotten so used to the sound that it didn't distract him from the soul-shattering work he had to do. He didn't think all those years in school would end with him sitting in a cubicle, looking over spreadsheets for someone else to take the credit and get double the pay. He took a sip of the coffee he had on his desk. Sadly, it had gone cold, so it didn't have the effect he wanted. He rubbed his temples to try not to get lost in the fact that his life was slowly dwindling away when the director's office door slammed open with a bang. "Jin Tae! Get your ass in here. Now!" Director Kwon's voice sliced through the entire office like a whip. It wasn't unusual for him to act like this; he got an ego trip off the fact that he had power over people and was more than happy to use it. Some of his coworkers kept their heads down to avoid attracting attention; for most of them, this was a job they couldn't afford to lose, so they were more than happy to ignore the misuse of authority, as long as it wasn't directed at them. Jin stood up and walked into the Director's office, where he shut the door behind him. If he was going to get shouted at, he would rather not have the entire world know why. Kwon directed him to sit, so he did and turned to face him. "Jin Tae," Kwon started off, his voice filled with fake sympathy, "Do you know why you are here?" Jin wasn't stupid; he knew exactly why he was called into the lion's den. "I assume this is about the Hanseong proposal." Kwon slammed his fat, stubby hands on his desk. "Exactly! Do you have any idea how much your failure cost us? Millions, can you believe it? Millions of won flushed down the toilet, all because of your incompetence." Jin's nails bit into the center of his palms. The Hanseong proposal wasn't his idea by any means. In fact, he had warned Director Kwon of the risks of investing in the project; the numbers didn't add up, but he had ignored him and forced it through. It had failed exactly as he knew it would, and it was clear he needed a scapegoat. "With all due respect," Jin started," I didn't approve the project. I informed you of the risks of pursuing the project, and you didn't list-" "Enough!" Kwon's roar cut him off. "Are you accusing me of mismanagement?" Jin locked eyes with Kwon. For some reason, today he felt bolder than usual. "Thats exactly what I'm saying, this is your fault if you listened to me, then all the money you said went down the drain wouldn't have been misused. Do not pin your own mistakes on me." Kwon's face went still, obviously shocked that someone in his office had the nerve to tell him the truth to his face. He went quiet for a minute, then suddenly his face went red, as he went into a rage. "You f**king bastard," he hissed. "You dare talk back to me and say I was wrong in my own office? Who the f**k do you think you are?" He pushed his chair over as he stood up, pointing at Jin aggressively, but Jin wasn't afraid. His boldness clearly growing as the seconds passed, he stood up, towering over the short, stubby man. "I'm the guy who clearly knows more about numbers than you do and the guy who told you that this exact thing was going to happen, and you pushed it through, you are the reason it failed, and I'm done taking the blame for your bullshit." Kwon's fist hit the table so hard that he was pretty sure it had left a dent. "Thats it, you are done here, effective immediately, and I will make sure that you will never find a job in this city ever again." Jin's boldness started to falter. It was true he was in the right, but that didn't matter to the world. He needed this job to survive. For a second, he thought about getting on his knees and begging for forgiveness, but he wouldn't give Kwon the satisfaction. "Good, that saves me the trouble of quitting." He turned and walked out, slamming the door on his way out. His chest started to burn as he fully started to realize what not having this job would m
