Who Just Hands People Random Babies? Lorena’s knock was greeted by chaos. The door flew open and seven boys exploded into the doorway, four younger boys, all a few years apart, and three older ones shoving from behind. “I did the lock!” “Yeah but I opened the handle!” Ren’s emotions swirled, a mix of excitement and joy, but underneath it all was a sharp pang of loss. They’re so excited! Ugh, they’re so cute. Her voice was bright but fragile, like she was holding onto the happiness deliberately. “Boys! How many times have I told you not to open the door to strangers anymore?” A tired looking woman approached, pushing past the mob of excited faces, a small infant cradled in her arms. She was wearing a flour dusted apron that had seen better days, her sleeves rolled up past the elbow. Her hair was tied up in a neat bun that Lorena had yet to figure out how to do. I’ll teach you that next, once you’ve mastered the ponytail. Let’s walk before we run okay? I thought Jade said she had seven brothers, that baby makes eight. Maybe she’s watching a neighbor’s kid A baby? Who would leave their baby with a neighbor? Ev—Everyone? Before Lorena could continue her exasperation the woman spoke. “And who might you be?” Lorena gave her best non-threatening smile. “I’m Lorena, a friend of Jade’s.” The woman’s eyes lit up and the gaggle of boys swarmed her with questions. “Are you on a quest?” “Has Jade found the Drowsilver Bloom yet?” “Can you do magic? My friend Cyrus said he saw a Mage turn someone into a chicken once!” “Inside, the lot of you. Give the girl some space,” the woman said as she swatted at the children. Lorena chuckled as they scattered into the house. “I’m Erin, Jade’s mother, and the unfortunate wrangler of those feral children,” the woman said as she gestured for Lorena to follow her inside. The house was small and cramped, but it gave a homey feel that Lorena envied. She’d never lived in the same place for very long, and she had given up decorating after one too many overly expensive shopping trips left her apartment feeling like a showroom floor rather than a home. Drawings clearly done by children were pinned to the walls, the remaining wall space was taken up by either shelves full of books or by expertly drawn depictions of herbs, reminiscent of the ones in Jade’s room. Erin moved a mix of toys and books off of the table and gestured for Lorena to sit. A loud crash made Lorena jump but didn’t faze Erin. “I told you boys, no teleport spells in the house!” Erin yelled up toward the stairs. “So. How’s my Jade doing? Is she eating enough?” She reminds me of my mom. Ren said, her voice soft and a touch sad. Lorena smiled through the guilt at Ren’s comment and focused on what was happening around her, rather than inside her. “Jade is great. Speaking of food, she had me bring you something.” Lorena opened a trade window. Item: Tough Wolf Meat (9) Item: Hand Written Note (1) Erin’s eyes sparkled the same way Jade’s did, bright and kind. She set the wolf meat aside and pulled out the note, all while still holding the baby somehow. She unfolded the note and was instantly absorbed in the writing. Lorena watched as her face shifted through expressions, ending with a bright smile, the corners of her eyes crinkling. See? Isn’t this worth it? Yeah, she seems happy. Erin looked up at Lorena, her eyes misty. “Thank you for bringing this. And the meat.” Erin sniffled and rubbed at her eye. “I’ve missed my girl. I have seven boys, three of which are old enough to make it out on their own. But it was my only girl that decided she had to prove herself.” Erin smiled, her eyes squinting. “Moss and I kept trying for more girls but clearly that didn’t work,” she said with a sheepish grin. “Eventually we got smart and stopped trying. Our little Jadie was perfect enough.” Are we crying? If not it’s your fault because I’m over here crying. Ren said with a sniffle. “You did a really great job raising her, she’s a wonderful person. And very… Passionat
