A Good Side Hustle Well this is… Disappointing. Lorena finished Ren’s thought. The Hall of Transference was packed, people weaving between each other with a practiced ease that gave their movements an almost dance-like quality. But once your eyes got past that, the room was nothing like the rest of the Mage Quarter. Where the Mage Quarter was whimsical and extravagant, the Hall of Transference was stark, functional. Dark bricks made up the large circular room, with twelve portals lining the walls, each in their own frame. In the center of the room were four large stone pillars, about thirty feet apart and formed the four corners of a square. Lorena looked up and saw three rings of floors, the center of each floor left open to air, as if something magical had once passed through the column. Her mind conjured images of a thunderous Mana waterfall, like the one between islands just outside this building. This reminds me of Earth. Because it’s sad and broken? Earth seems like a sad and broken place. Ren’s statement was truer than she knew. “The portals in black frames take you between floors and are fine to use. Do not use any other portals,” Harkyn said. Lorena felt him watching her and straightened her spine. “Are you alright?” “Yes, this just wasn’t what I had been expecting.” “Ah, yes many say that during their first visit to the hall. Its stark nature is sadly a necessity due to the immense amount of Mana required to maintain the portals.” Lorena glanced around the room and noticed several portals that appeared non operational, their shimmering liquid missing and frames empty. “Why don’t some of the frames have a portal?” “Those were portals to various cities in Brocken and RockPort.” Harkyn didn’t need to finish the statement. Ren glowed warm at the mention of Brocken, and seeing the severed portal connection between the two kingdoms certainly made it clear that the feeling was mutual. “Now, remember to be cautious, Rogues are known to frequent this place for its easy gold making and experience. I will see you around, Lorena,” Harkyn said with a devilish grin, then walked through a portal with a purple frame. Are you okay with this? Lorena asked as she situated herself behind one of the pillars. Just don’t kill anyone and I’ll be fine. Ren said, her voice casual, but Lorena could feel her slipping deeper into their mind. Lorena ignored the guilt, this was by far the least terrible thing she’d subjected Ren to, and they needed the gold, and experience. She was by no means an expert at pick pocketing back on Earth, but over her long career she had gotten pretty good at slipping things in and out of pockets unnoticed. However with everyone storing items in their inventory through the System, and the fact that Pick Pocket was a System skill, she wasn’t really sure how it would work. She watched as a man approached, level 12. He was clearly distracted by something in his interface, his eyes glossed over and his steps uneven. She slipped into Stealth and crept toward him. They were nearly touching before the Pick Pocket skill was enabled. She activated the skill, and a window appeared in her interface. Total amount: 30 gold, 95 silver, 33 copper How much are you withdrawing? Lorena entered an amount into the field, keeping her legs moving in step with him. 2 gold, 0 silver, 0 copper Risk: low She hit accept and the window disappeared. She opened her inventory and saw the gold appear, followed by a notification Currency Total: 76 gold, 58 silver, 44 copper +150 Experience +1 Stealth Skill Tree Point A minor adrenaline rush itched at her skin. It wasn’t quite as satisfying as pick pocketing back on Earth, but seeing that she could not only get gold but also some minor experience and stealth skill tree points made the act rather rewarding. Collapsing Shadows: 12 seconds remaining Lorena moved with purpose back to the pillar and dropped her Stealth. The timing wasn’t too tight, as long as she didn’t go for someone far from the pillar.
