Desperate Times Morning! Ren said, her voice cheery. Lorena immediately opened her interface and stared at her level. Lorena, Human Rogue, Level 48. She wasn’t expecting anything different, but she had hoped maybe this was all a dream, somehow. It certainly didn’t feel right. I think everything is going to be okay. We still have ten hours until you have to return, and Weaver didn’t seem that upset that we might not make the deadline. Lord Shade— Please, Ren. Just for a moment I’d like to not think about what happened. She felt Ren descend a layer, giving her some space. Lorena stepped out of the room to see Harkyn and Naith in a heated discussion that ended the second she came out. “How are you feeling?” Harkyn asked, a forced chipperness to his tone. “Good. Everything okay?” “Oh yes, just working out the last few details.” “Details to what?” She looked at Naith who had her back pressed to the wall. It looked defensive rather than casual, like she was ready for a fight. “How to get you the last of your levels in time.” Hope rose but she squashed it down, hope was a dangerous emotion. “We ready?” Weaver asked as he walked in the door to the safe house. “Just about,” Harkyn said. “Ready for what?” She asked, she didn’t want to believe that they had a plan. Weaver walked over to her and opened a trade window. Item: Caustic Petal Ash (500) Item: Shimmerweed Paste (500) Item: Major Healing Potion (500) Item: Roasted Turkey Leg (1200) Item: Leather Armor Repair Kit (50) Lorena stared at him. “What is all this for?” “Just accept the trade, we have to get moving.” That’s a lot of turkey legs, you’d think he’d give us a variety. Lorena accepted the trade and followed the group out the door, then out of the city. They walked for three hours, deep into the forest where she and Erin had gone to farm Blood Thorn. I miss Jates. Me too. They came to a group of three mages sitting around a campfire laughing and chatting despite the dangers that lurked all around them in the forest. “I was wondering if you were ever going to show up.” A stout dwarf said, clearly the leader of their group. “It took a while to get the necessary funds in order,” Harkyn said with a hint of annoyance in his voice. “But you do have them, right?” “Yes,” Weaver said, his jaw tight. “Great. What scale do you need it for?” Harkyn’s face grew grim. “26,280 to 1.” The dwarves let out a low whistle. “Alright, that’ll be 7.5 mil.” Lorena balked. Did he mean 7.5 million gold? That couldn’t be right. But she watched as Harkyn walked over the dwarf and opened a trade window. “Excellent. We’ll get to work right away.” Lorena watched on with an odd sense of detached confusion. That amount of gold didn’t even make sense to her. I guess we know where our payout for the blacksmith job went. Yeah, I guess. That amount doesn’t even seem real. The dwarves began channeling, a swirling storm growing between them. It looked just like the dungeon portal she, Harkyn, and Naith entered a few days ago. Except this one was bright red. Naith walked up to her and opened a trade window. Item: Beer Battered Boar Meat (36) “One a month, to keep you sane.” she whispered. Lorena looked at her confused. She did the math, that worked out to… three years. Fear gripped her. What’s going on? Naith seems sad. This is bad. I don’t like this. “Will somebody tell me what’s going on?” We should run. Harkyn let out a sigh and stared at the ground, avoiding her gaze. “There is one way to get you the last of your experience, but it is… challenging.” “Okay…” She said with a noticeable amount of hesitation. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes.” Please don’t say stupid things. “You say that now,” Naith grumbled under her breath. See? “Much like the dungeon we did, mages can create temporary pocket realities. These realities can exist at an accelerated timescale, where time passes faster inside than it does out here.” A trickle of dread started to find its way into her stomach. “While inside, you will face an endle
