Harkyn’s Guide to Speed Leveling The morning air was crisp as they left the city gates. Lorena felt lighter than she had in days—or maybe that was Ren, humming faintly in the back of her mind. “It normally takes the average person anywhere from one to two years of dedicated and focused effort to reach level fifty. Unfortunately, you do not have that much time, so we will have to get… Creative,” Harkyn said. A small pool of dread formed in Lorena’s stomach at hearing the numbers and she let out an exasperated sigh. “That’s encouraging.” “I am glad you think so, most people would be quite demoralized facing such odds.” “Sarcasm, Harkyn,” Naith said from behind them. “Ah. Well, no need to worry. I have crunched the numbers and have come up with a plan that at least has a chance to work.” They hustled down the path until they came to a turn in the road. Lorena heard a faint pop and a rush of air, then Harkyn was on the other side of the fence, walking deep into the forest. Lorena climbed awkwardly over the fence as a shadow crossed over her. She looked up and caught a glimpse of a cloak blowing in the wind, then saw Naith land in a crouch on the other side of the fence. Stop making me look lame in front of Naith. Ren teased. Lorena jogged to catch back up with Harkyn who was still talking, none the wiser that she’d fallen behind. “The art of speed leveling is one fraught with rumors and anecdotal evidence, as I am sure you can imagine seeing as you can only complete the leveling journey once. However, there are some methods and things you can do to notably improve your leveling speed.” Harkyn came to an abrupt stop and checked his map. He made a sharp left turn and continued at his marching pace, sweat beginning to bead on his brow. “Where was I?” “There are methods to improve my leveling speed.” “Right. For instance, in a little under a month’s time is the summer festival of the Goddesses. You’re a follower of the Goddess Tevra, correct?” Lorena hesitated for a moment. Just say yes. I deem you an honorary follow of the Goddess. But you really should work on yourself or you’ll have a crazy amount of penance to pay. “That’s right.” “Excellent. The Festival of Mending Hands as I’m sure you know is Goddess Tevra’s event. Once you gain her blessing, you will gain a buff that grants an increase 20% experience gained from turning in quests.” We usually went with the Bountiful Blessing rather than the Triumphant Blessing, that gave a better yield on fall crops. Harkyn paused to consult his map again. “Now, while I’m sure you’re well aware of the Goddess’s blessings and all that, the important part to note is the fact that you only get the bonus from turning in a quest. This means you can hold a large volume of completed quests, then turn them in all at once for a large bonus.” An uneasy feeling passed over her. “Won’t people get upset if I hold their quests?” Aw, Goddess Tevra is rubbing off on you already. “Nah,” Naith said. Harkyn rocked his hand back and forth in a gesture that did not inspire confidence. “Is it frowned upon? Yes. Will people be upset, especially with the summer festival right around the corner? Probably not.” “As long as you actually do the quest most will not be bothered by it,” Naith said. The plan seemed solid. Store up a ton of quests then turn them all in for a large chunk of experience, that would get her a ton of levels. She was starting to feel slightly better about her prospects. It would still be a lot of work, but maybe with Harkyn’s careful planning it would be doable. “For this strategy to work, you need to complete a very large volume of quests. The best place to find large concentrations of quests is in small villages scattered around the kingdom.” Lorena dared a glance at her map during a brief moment of flat terrain. They were making a bee line through the forest, directly to Lubeck. “That’s why we’re headed to Lubeck?” “Excellent deduction. Apart from village quests there are two larger quests I hav
