Just Doing Rogue Things Lorena had made good use of the little time she had before Sunday rolled around, and now had only one thing left to do before she executed her plan. She poked the spot in her mind where Ren used to be, but knew it was fruitless. Ren had been gone for several days at this point, and nothing she’d tried had made even the slightest difference. Elena returned from the back of the shop holding an item wrapped in silk. She placed it on the workbench in the middle of the room and removed the covering with a flourish. Lorena’s heart skipped a beat as she saw her very first custom made dagger, in Everwind that is. Commissioning custom weapons was commonplace in her career, but this was easily one of the most exciting pieces she’d ever gotten. The fang kept its original curve, but the inner and outer sides of the curve were filed down to a razor sharp edge, perfect for slicing and gutting. The tip of the fang remained pointed and sharp, perfect for puncturing like the tooth was designed for. The hilt was a simple strap of leather wrapped around the end of the tooth with a loop to slide her wrist into, great for times when she needed extra leverage. The most fascinating aspect of the blade though was the curse. Shadows drifted in and out of cracks in the blade like plumes of smoke. She held the blade in her hand and felt at home. She gave it a quick swing and it sang through the air, feeling like an extension of her hand. She glanced at Elena, her smile large. Lorena blushed at the blacksmith’s reaction, clearly pleased with her creation. “This is better than I could have imagined, thank you.” “Of course. The curse was tricky to work with, it was particularly… hungry. But that makes it all the better for combat.” What does—Right. She cut herself off, not finishing her question for Ren. “Is there anything I should know? When it comes to using the curse that is.” Elena tapped her chin. “It is pretty straight forward. There is a roughly 30% chance for it to inflict shadow damage to your target. Your actions don’t have much control over it, it’s fully self sufficient.” Lorena nodded, then equipped the dagger, replacing her Skinning Knife in her main hand. [Rendclaw’s Vengeance] (rare) (one handed weapon) +50 health +8% Power Rendclaw’s curse - 30% chance on hit to inflict shadow damage to the target Bonus Health increased from +10 to +60 Bonus Power percentage increased from 5% to 12% Lorena traded Elena 72 gold for the dagger. It only cost her 65 gold but Lorena insisted that Elena accept a tip. It was what Ren would have wanted. Lorena stared up at the sky, watching the sun set and darkness fall upon the city. She had prepared all she could. Ren wasn’t coming back. It was time. She swept her way through the Trade District and toward the Crafters’ Quarter. As she turned onto the street the heavens opened up, buckets of rain falling down. People rushed home as shops around the city closed early. The rain made the cobblestone slick, but Lorena kept walking, a cold enveloping her. Lorena trudged through the puddles that had formed on the street as she approached Elvenarr’s. Harkyn was still under the tree, using some type of spell to repel the rain away from him and his book. She looked away before he saw her, but he definitely saw her. That was okay, it was part of the plan. She just had to hope he didn’t decide to enter the store unexpectedly and interfere. With one final poke of Ren, Lorena pushed through the door and into the warmth of the enchanting shop. Once inside she made a show of drying off her boots, using it as an excuse to scan the store. It was completely empty, not a single other customer. It seemed that even in this world people avoided the rain if they could. Izul ran up to her and screeched, his red eyes locked on her. His slithering tongue darted in and out of his mouth like a snake’s. Lorena ignored him, trying to stay casual, as Lorv hobbled up to her. She gave him a friendly wave despite the shudd
