You’ve got mail Lorena was back standing on Grandma Dorry’s front step. She’d spent the afternoon delivering the retrieved mail to every corner of Lubeck, at Ren’s insistence. The work was mindless, which gave her time to think. Normally this would be great, but unfortunately her brain was preoccupied on the encounter with the bandits. Why was someone hiring bandits to close down the road between Everwind and Brocken? She had no idea, but it sounded political. All of the Brocken stuff seemed political. She tried her best to put it out of her mind. She despised petty political squabbles, and her focus was on leveling. She had completed 18 quests so far, all still waiting to be turned in. She had no idea if this was a good amount, but it felt like an accomplishment. On top of that, she had gained three levels and was 90% of the way to level 20 thanks to her class passive experience gainers like utilizing Stealth, lock picking and pickpocketing, and killing monsters during her quests. She hadn’t gotten much for her levels other than Bladewraith Talent Points which she hadn’t stopped to spend yet, but she had a feeling level 20 would bring some good rewards. She sucked in a breath and knocked on the door. The knock was met with the sound of shuffling feet and muffled yelling, then the door swung open. “Took you long enough,” Grandma Dorry said, then looked around and scowled at Lorena. “Where’s the courier? I need to give him a piece of my mind.” “Unfortunately he was killed, by bandits.” “Killed? Yeah right! More like slacking off somewhere. There aren’t any bandits anywhere near Lubeck.” “I assure you, the bandits were very much real. I had to fight them off to retrieve the mail,” Lorena said, trying her best to remain calm. “So he’s late and he can’t even keep the mail secure! I swear your generation are the laziest I’ve ever met.” Please, for Goddess Tevra, wrap this up. Ren said, irritation wafting off her. “I’m carrying out his final delivery. Would you like me to take your nephews present to him?” Grandma Dorry threw up her arms, “what do you think? Nathan has waited long enough,” then she threw a box at Lorena’s feet and slammed the door. Lorena dropped the letter she’d been holding for the woman on the floor by the door and threw the present in her inventory. It was another quest. That’s all that mattered. It would all be worth it once she turned it in during the Festival of Mending Hands. Lorena set off to deliver Grandma Dorry’s present to her nephew, the final, final delivery she had to make. Checking her map, it seemed that he was located at the other border crossing to Brocken. At least he’s where we wanted to go anyway. Ren said, the happiness in her voice sounding a bit too forced. We could have skipped this quest, just saying. Goddess Tevra would never have approved. She hates undelivered mail. Lorena made her way out of the town. As she approached the boundary between kingdoms an itch of nervousness crawled across her skin. This isn’t what I was expecting. Why not? It’s just a single guy. Where’s the security? The inspection check points, the guard huts? That sounds excessive. Was that common back on Earth? It was everywhere I went that had border disputes. Well maybe we aren’t as distrusting as you Earth folk. As she got closer to the man sat on a tree stump, drawing shapes in the packed gravel road he jolted upright, dropping his stick but carefully stepping past his artwork. “Halt!” His voice was more startled than commanding. Lorena tried to hide her bemused smirk with a smile, but wasn’t sure she was pulling it off. “You are required to pay a crossing fee to enter Brocken. Fifteen gold and twenty silver.” That’s absurd. Who can afford that? “I’m not crossing, I’m here to deliver a package. Are you Grandma Dorry’s nephew, Nathan?” The man’s boyish face fell and he let out a low sigh. “That I am, what did she send this time?” Lorena frowned and pulled out the package, opening a trade window with him.
