Goldilocks and the three specializations Lorena stared at the Rogue specialization selection window in her interface. Harkyn and Weaver were long gone, and Naith had gone up to the bar a while ago and had still not returned. So, what are we thinking? Silence. Ren, come on, I need your help with this choice. Oh, so now you’re going to listen to me? But when it comes to not killing innocent people, my opinions are meaningless? I’m so tired of having this argument Ren. I do listen to you. I value your opinion. But things move quickly and I don’t always have time to sit down and have a whole conversation about what we’re doing. I needed to adapt and nobody died, the dwarf is fine. I just stunned him. And look what it got us? We met Lord Shade. That’s a direct link to Bale. To our mission. To our freedom. But you’re upset that I didn’t take time to talk to about whether or not I should stun someone? What about the girl? Ren’s voice was venomous and her anger roared in Lorena’s ears. Lorena’s face fell as the scared girls face appeared in her mind. I don’t know. I don’t think Naith would have—she wasn’t part of the plan. Because you never have a plan. You just charge in head first and assume you can muscle your way through any scenario. That’s not fair, we had a plan. Then the plan went to shit. What was I supposed to do, just give up and waste everything we’ve gone through? Ren’s emotions spilled over, thrashing against Lorena’s. “You seem upset.” Lorena jolted, she hadn’t even noticed Naith had sat back down. She dismissed her interface and plastered on a smile. “I’m fine.” Naith gave her a pained smile and slid a glass of murky brown liquid toward her. “I didn’t rat you out to Weaver, I hope you know that.” Lorena shifted her gaze from the glass to Naith. Her face seemed genuine. “No?” Naith sighed. “When I first joined his crew, I did a job with Harkyn. Harkyn was supposed to… acquire, some items from a place. He missed one, I grabbed it and was about 20 seconds behind Harkyn when a royal guard came down the street and saw my snapdragon, Snappy.” Lorena’s pulse quickened. She’d had similar experiences in the past, and they never ended well. “I managed to talk my way out of the guards paranoia and get out of there without an inspection. Everything was fine.” Naith took a long sip of her drink. “We head back to Weaver, tell him everything went fine, he’s happy. The next day he somehow found out, I still don’t know how but he did.” She looked down into her lap and pet Noodle on its soft scaly head. “That was the day I lost Snappy.” Ren lurched back and disgust bubbled up inside her. Lorena cleared her throat as she stared at Noodle. “Understood, thank you.” Naith nodded, then took another sip. She cleared her throat again and fought against years of training that told her to never, ever ask what she was about to ask. “What happened, to the girl?” Naith cocked her head. “What girl?” “From the Copper Lantern. You said you ‘took care of her’.” Horror struck Naith’s face. “Oh, nothing like—” She let out a quiet chuckle. “Spend enough time in Old Town and you will get to know Vess’s girls. We have a rapport, and I made sure she knew not to say anything. She’s fine.” Ren instantly relaxed and the ache in her chest lessened significantly. Drink the stupid beer. Ren said. It felt like a small peace offering, but Lorena didn’t let herself get her hopes up. Lorena looked at the beer, then picked it up and brought it to her lips. She steeled herself, preparing for the taste of the last beer she had in a bar like this. Her small sip turned into a long one, as the dark amber liquid soothed her soul. It was strongly bitter, but not overpoweringly so, a subtle note of sweetness kept it from being too much. “This is delicious.” Naith smiled and raised her glass. “Glad you like it.” The two of them sat in a quiet silence while Naith finished her drink then left, leaving Lorena and Ren in an uncomfortable silence. Lorena spoke first, knowing Ren cou
