City Exploration To your right, I bet she sells hair ties. The girl’s smile was bright as Lorena stopped in front of her. She was the same girl she had bought the brush and polish from the day before. “Hi again, do you have any hair ties for sale?” The girl produced a small box of them in a variety of colors and thickness. Lorena picked up two, one yellow and one pale blue. The yellow one was thick and made of a soft fabric. The blue one was tight and elastic. Are you insane? What? Lorena looked at the hair ties in confusion. Those color choices are actually malicious. Ren said in a dramatic tone, almost pained. That’s a bit much for seven in the morning, Ren. Fine. Get all thin ones, they’ll keep your hair in place better. Choose the forest green, it’s your favorite, right? I already regret telling you that. Ren cackled. Grab the dark blue one too, that one will be the one thick one we get. What does thick versus thin do for us? My hair is a bit brittle and constantly being in a thin, tight ponytail is going to cause breakage. You can wear the thick one when you’re not busy being… you. Breakage, got it. That does sound painful. She could practically feel the eyeroll. Yes, and it makes our hair look terrible. Pick two of the burgundy, it’ll blend in with the blood I’m sure you’re going to get in my hair. Four? That seems excessive. Lorena intentionally ignored the jab about the blood. Trust me, you’ll lose three of them by the end of the month. How? I have a magical inventory to keep them in. It’s one of the great mysteries of the world. I think the System collects them while we sleep. Lorena chuckled, picked up the new colors, and paid. They were only 5 silver each thankfully. Lorena checked her map occasionally against the directions the clerk at the inn had given her. Thankfully, Ishal wasn’t working at the time. Once she was out of the square she quickly found the small nondescript building the clerk had described. The only thing inside was a large ornate gold frame that contained a shimmering pane of what appeared to be water, suspended in space. What is that? She asked Ren. Her instinct was to touch it, but that seemed risky. It’s a portal. You walk through it. Where does it take me? How should I know? Walk through and find out. Lorena circled it, finding no visible difference from any angle. Does it hurt? Ren paused, then spoke. I usually get a pretty bad headache, sometimes a nosebleed. Other than that though it’s not too bad. Lorena scrunched up her face, then walked with purpose through the portal and arrived in an entirely new world. Achievement: Don’t take the high road or the low road, take a portal Lorena looked around, then felt her nose. She looked at her fingertip but found no blood. I feel fine. Maybe I got lucky? Ren was suspiciously quiet, but Lorena could feel a spark of satisfaction from her corner of their mind. You were messing with me, weren’t you? An object flying in a wobbly pattern drew her shoulders tense. It took her a moment to process what it was: a book, flying through the air by flapping its covers. It flipped opened and several pages flew by until it landed on one that read. “Welcome to the Mage Quarter. Are you visiting or just passing through?” Lorena looked for a pen but didn’t see one, so she just answered out loud. “Passing through.” The book turned several pages, “Excellent! Enjoy your time in the Mage Quarter. Please be wary of the platforms, they do move.” And with that the book flew off, flapping its covers in the breeze. Lorena walked through the perfectly manicured grass until she arrived at the edge of a large cliff, no other path in sight. Just as she started looking for a bridge, a massive boulder leisurely floated across the canyon, several people standing on it. They all got off once the boulder arrived at the other side, and Lorena stepped on. She moved to the middle of the boulder, wary of any sudden movements knocking her off, but the boulder floated through the air smoothl
