A Good Nights Rest Can Cure Anything Erin opened the door with a warm smile that faded quickly once she saw the state Lorena was in. She wrapped her up in a tight hug and ushered her inside. “Are you alright dear? You look like death.” Lorena tried to laugh but it came out as more of a wheeze. “Just tired. Been busy.” “I’ll say, level 25 already. It feels like just yesterday you stumbled into my doorway a meek little thing.” Lorena sat down at the table as the kids ran around the room barraging her with questions she was too tired to answer. “Leave the poor girl alone, go play in your rooms,” Erin said and swatted the kids back upstairs. Aw, they’re so cute though. “How have you been?” Lorena asked, trying her best to look like she wasn’t about to drop dead. “Oh you know, just as well as anyone would be with an army of feral children to take care of.” Erin ran into the kitchen and returned with some tea. Lorena accepted the tea but hesitated, her mind still excessively paranoid after Lord Shade’s quest. She’s not going to poison you. Ren said, her voice slightly teasing. Lorena took a tentative sip, the warmth of the tea spreading across her like a salve to the wounds of her day. “Have you heard from Jade?” Erin asked. Lorena shook her head. “No, I haven’t left the city much. But that might be changing soon.” “Oh? —Boys! Be careful with the shears.” Erin yelled as the youngest ran after three older boys, snapping gardening shears as he ran after them. Lorena handed Erin a scroll with the list of herbs she needed. Erin’s face fell dark, a frown casting a shadow over her expression as she read the list. “Shimmerweed I can understand. But blood thorn? Do you know—” She stopped herself when she saw the pained expression on Lorena’s face. Lorena didn’t want to have to explain anything. She just wanted a friend to talk to, and sleep. She wanted sleep more than anything in the world. “It’s for a class quest,” Lorena said, though based on Erin’s reaction she thought Lord Shade may have given her a nonstandard list of herbs to gather. The lesson had certainly seemed non standard. Erin let out a sigh. “These are all relatively easy to find near the city. But blood thorn.” She shook her head, then handed the scroll back to Lorena. “That is going to be tricky.” “How so?” I mean it’s got blood in the name. Erin got up and scanned a nearby bookshelf. It was full of thick leather wrapped books and several trinkets. She returned with a book with a black leather cover, “Dangers of Herbing” painted on the front in a beautiful script. She flipped through the book until she found the section on blood thorn. “This is the plant you harvest blood thorn from.” Erin gestured to a detailed drawing of what appeared to be more beast than plant. It looked somewhat reminiscent of a sunflower from back on Earth, if a sunflower had teeth instead of petals around its face, dripped blood, and had several twenty-foot vines for arms. “It requires careful planning to take one down, and you must move fast to extract the blood thorn essence before the plant despawns, or you get a much less potent version of the essence.” Cool cool cool. So, how do we feel about skipping this quest? No? Yeah, I figured as much. Lorena looked over the page, she was at her limit for fear and dread and her eyes just glossed over. She closed her eyes and held her head in her hands. “Thanks for the heads up. I’ll be okay though, I can handle myself.” She mumbled toward the table. Erin let out a well practiced exasperated sigh, one that she probably used several times a day on her children. “I’m sure you can. In the morning we can go over the finer details of all the locations, and some specific strategies that have proven successful with the blood thorn plants.” Lorena sat upright. “Tomorrow? No, I’m leaving tonight.” Erin laughed. “You’re joking, right?” I’m with her on this one. She can only see how bad you look, but I can feel it, viscerally. We need sleep. I have the potion of whatev
