She’s Getting Angry Ren… Help. Lorena’s voice was weak, her throat starting to burn. What am I supposed to do? Ren was frantic, her voice shrill. Lorena could feel her grasping for things, tension rippling off her as she scrambled for a way to help. Lord Shade crouched down, face inches from hers. Lorena could feel the heat of his breath on her cheek. “Turn your focus inward. Listen to the blood flowing through you. Identify the poison, the thing that shouldn’t be there.” Her throat felt tight, the poison spreading from her chest upwards. It was becoming hard to breathe. A small part of her brain told her she only had a few more minutes to live if she didn’t do something soon. The poison, it’s everywhere. I can’t—Start with your chest. Focus on your lungs. Lorena’s head spun. She thought about her lungs, but all that came to mind was the immense burning sensation. And the pressure, it felt like a truck was sitting on her chest. Like every inhale felt like it could be her last. “Do you feel it? The burning sensation. I’d guess it’s moving up your throat by now.” Lord Shade smiled down at her. She felt Ren recoil. He’s enjoying this. Lorena lunged, teeth aimed at his neck, the primal and animalistic part of her mind taking over. She didn’t even see him react but the next thing she knew she was on her back, his knee threatening to crack her sternum. “Redirect the poison away from vital areas to reduce its effects. Flush it from your system.” His eyes flared wide, the intensity in his words drawing Lorena’s panic riddled attention to a pinpoint of focus. He wanted her to live. Current Health: 20% She clamped her eyes shut and tried to focus. All she could feel was burning, and an endless flame that wanted to consume her from the inside out. Was this really how she was going to die? Current Health: 10% Lord Shade let out a sigh and moved his knee off her chest and knelt next to her. “If you don’t at least try, you’re going to die. That would be such a shame.” She felt Ren flinch, then hope surged from her part of their shared mind. Hold on. I have an idea. Good or bad? You’re going to love it. Ren said, her voice straining. Oh, so bad. Lorena felt Ren smile, then saw a tendril of shadow rise up from Skeletor. It arced wildly in the air like live electricity, snaking its way through the air, looking desperately for a target. “That’s interesting,” Lord Shade said as his eyes tracked the tendril. He reached out to caress the shadow. A small part of her mind went to warn him, but she couldn’t form words. “Hmm. You are fascinating aren’t you?” he said as the tendrils swirled around his fingers. The tendril flared wide, then shot back into the blade. Current Health: 2% I was so close. Frustration and sorrow radiated from Ren. Lord Shade sighed and put a hand to Lorena’s chest. She tensed, then felt the flames shift, traveling back toward her chest. She opened her eyes and saw embers floating up his arm as he pulled the poison from her veins. The burning was the first to go, leaving in its wake an immense cold that nearly burned. Then the pressure in her chest lifted, leaving her lungs feeling like they were ready to burst. Several seconds passed before the sensations dissipated, leaving her on the floor gasping for breath, her lungs finally back to normal and yet still felt empty. She rolled to the side and puked, then went back to panting as her health flashed in her interface. She took out a turkey leg and ate it, thanking Naith with every bite. Lorena watched Lord Shade, his attention fully on Skeletor. He tilted his head as he studied the blade, clearly fascinated. “You’ll have to tell me how you did that little trick.” Her attention fell to Ren, memories of the last time she fought with the curse resurfacing. She wasn’t sure that was what happened, but it was the only thing that made sense. Are you okay? Yes. Her voice was shaky but nearby. She could feel Ren brushing up against her, the sensation comforting. Are you? I think so. Sh
