Darnathal The five days of wagon travel to Darnathal was surprisingly pleasant, once Ren was convinced that Jeremy wasn’t a threat. Wow. It’s bigger than I imagined. Ren said, wonder in her voice. You’ve never been here? No. I could never afford the trip, not that I could leave the farm for that long anyways. Panic shot through their body. Wait. What did you do with the animals? Fear spread across Lorena at the question. What do you mean? Ren gasped, her voice furious. The cows. The boars. The Mana larvae. Lorena sputtered. She hadn’t done anything. She just ran. A sob washed away the anger. I’m sorry. I—I didn’t think. I heard a noise and ran. The sobs continued, a deep sadness filling their shared mind. I’m sure someone came and checked on them, right? A neighbor maybe? Just stop. Leave me alone. Ren slipped into the recesses of their mind. Lorena stared up at the towering castle walls, large chunks of limestone layered on top of each other creating a formidable defense. The afternoon sun shone brightly against it, but after Ren’s realization everything seemed duller. As they came to the large iron gate four men approached, two in the front and two from behind, swords drawn and shields up. Lorena grabbed for her dagger but stopped when Jeremy shot her a disapproving glance and put a calming hand on her knee. “Halt! By the order of King Strathmere of Everwind, you must exit the wagon and allow us to inspect you and your cargo.” “Never had this before Brocken decided to stick their greedy hands where they didn’t belong.” Jeremy grumbled under his breath aas he brought the wagon to a halt and hopped down. Lorena followed suit and stood near Jeremy, her eyes darting from guard to guard trying to take everything in. She noticed shadows trained on them from the top of the castle walls and she did her best to keep her hand off her dagger and her posture relaxed. She used Identify on one of the guards and dread swirled in her stomach. Everwind City Guard Barns, Level 100 Warrior The level discrepancy between her and the guard was staggering. She knew the level cap was 100, but she didn’t know how many people were actually 100. Jeremy was only level 33, and she hadn’t met anyone over level 70 in Silvershire. She’d have to keep an eye out for other people in Darnathal to get a better sense of things. She kept peeking at the space Ren occupied in her mind, but she was distant and quiet. That was probably for the best considering their current situation, but it was distracting knowing she was so upset. One of the guards approached Lorena, shield on his back and sword in its scabbard, but she could see his knuckles white on the hilt, ready for a fight. “You will allow me to inspect your inventory. If you are found to be carrying any illicit or banned items you will be detained for further inspection and inquiry. If you refuse this inspection, you will be detained.” A prompt appeared in her interface. Allow Everwind City Guard Barns to view your inventory? She rocked her jaw back and forth, trying not to react to the threat he just made, and allowed him access to her inventory. A notification appeared in her interface that her inventory was being viewed by a third party. She didn’t have anything to hide, but she didn’t like the fact that she’d be detained for having certain items when she didn’t know what those items could be. After a few moments the guard stepped back and she got another notification, this one stating that the third party had left. “Very well, you may proceed.” Two of the guards drew their swords on Jeremy. Lorena took two steps back from the guard that had inspected her and her hand flew to her dagger. The guard in front of her drew his sword. “Don’t even think about it, miss,” he said while shaking his head, not a drop of fear in his voice. She lowered her hand from her dagger, but kept her eyes trained on his sword. “What did I do?” Jeremy said in an exasperated tone. “What are you doing with these?” One of the guards
