Opening my eyes, I was greeted by greenery. The sky was blue. As far as I could see, there was a green meadow full of flowers. No trace of the dark, infinite abyss. No Tower of Babel. No angel statue with a disturbing hand-mouth. Just sunlight, grass, and flowers swaying gently in the wind. For a moment, I simply stood there. Then I slowly looked around. This place was completely empty of human settlements. No village. No road. No smoke rising in the distance. No signboards helpfully telling me where to go. A beginner-friendly experience, clearly. I tried to pinch my arm. Again, I felt no pain. Only pressure. "So at least I know I am still in a game and did not reincarnate after death due to a mistake in programming." I nodded seriously. "That would be embarrassing." I looked around once again, making sure no one was nearby. Then I coughed. My cheeks grew slightly hot. "Status window, open!" Silence. Nothing happened. For a few seconds, only the wind answered me. The flowers swayed peacefully, as if politely pretending they had not witnessed that. Heat started rising in my cheeks. Then, just as I was about to bury the memory of this moment deep inside my soul, a familiar holographic interface suddenly appeared in front of me. [Name: Locked] [Race: Human] [Ancestor: Marked by Curse] [Synchronization: 3%] [Bloodline Purity: 99%] [Tier: Nameless] [Traits: 3] [Active Skills: Empty] [Passive Traits: Noble's Presence, Mark of Curse, Grace of the One] [Titles: Child of Adam, Child of Eve] [Stats:] [Health - 10] [Mind - 11] [Strength - ]15 [Endurance - 9] [Agility - 15] [Faith - 2] [Charm - 11] [BloodForce - 8] The amount of information overwhelmed me. I did not have much experience with RPGs, so it was difficult to understand all the terms and numbers displayed here. Stats. Traits. Titles. Synchronization. BloodForce. I felt like I had accidentally opened the tax documents of a fantasy hero. Thankfully, after clicking on a specific section of the status window, I could see a brief explanation. What made me most curious was obviously the identity of my ancestor. I clicked on the ancestor field, and an explanation appeared below it. [Ancestor] [Each player will be assigned their primary ancestor, with whom they share a direct or indirect bloodline connection.] [The title of the ancestor will appear instead of the name until the player discovers their name during a quest.] "Hm. So Marked by Curse is the title of my ancestor." I stroked my chin. "Honestly, this could be anyone. There are plenty of figures in history who were cursed. Judas, Tantalus, Tutankhamun, Faust…" I rubbed my temples in frustration. This title did not make it any easier to figure out my ancestor's identity. "Well, it narrowed the search from thousands of possibilities to a few dozen." Which was progress. Technically. A very useless kind of progress, but still progress. "Can't I just try shouting random names until one works?" The idea was stupid. But stupid ideas deserved testing. "My ancestor is Faust!" [Warning] [Lying about the name of your ancestor results in a penalty.] [Next time, the player's access to Epoch will be suspended for 30 real-life days.] Of course, they had countermeasures. I stared at the warning. Then slowly nodded. "I see. So we are doing this the honest way." I did not really want to get banned from the start, so it seemed I had no choice but to do the quest properly. "Next, let's check what synchronization is. I think I got a system message about it before I blacked out in the tower." I clicked on the synchronization field. [Synchronization] [The more knowledge you possess about your ancestor, and the better your thoughts and actions align with theirs, the higher the Synchronization stat will rise.] [A higher Synchronization allows the player to channel more power from their ancestor and gain fragments of memories belonging to said ancestor.] "So basically, I can see history with my own eyes?" My eyes lit up. "That's neat. Although it is pro
