From a sky red as if tainted by blood, feathers fell like snow. Some were crimson. Some remained beautiful and white. Amid it all, a boy stood and watched the scene in awe. It was so beautiful he could not utter a single word. And so terrifying he could not move a muscle. Soon, a shadow covered his face. Amid the falling feathers, bodies appeared. Some looked human. Some resembled strange eyeballs surrounded by rings. Others were like withered mummies, their dried skin clinging tightly to humanoid skeletons. Above it all, standing atop a cloud as if it were solid, was a middle-aged man. He overlooked the world like a god. His beard and hair were black like night, and his grey eyes were fixed on the boy below. "The choice given to you was very simple, yet you did not believe. You hesitated until the very end... and this is the result." His voice carried disappointment. And exhaustion. The boy wanted to respond, but before he could gather his thoughts, the middle-aged man appeared only a few centimeters in front of him. Grey eyes observed him in silence. The man lifted a wrinkled hand and gently removed a feather from the boy's hair. "I realized this approach does not work," he said, his voice gentle, like a father about to advise his son. "I was too gentle. Too worried about you. So you did not grow." His fingers brushed the boy's cheek. "Instead, you became... this." The boy wanted to pull away with all his might. His body did not listen. "So I will leave everything to you. I will take my hands off everything and will not intervene at all. You must learn what accountability is, even if it means you perish." The boy could only look at the middle-aged man with fear and confusion. Then he noticed a reflection in the man's grey eyes. Who is that? That's not me. The young man reflected in those grey eyes had long flowing golden hair falling past his shoulders. His face was delicate and beautiful, and his eyes were blue like the sky. A stranger. No. Something worse. A stranger wearing his place. Before the boy could understand what he was seeing, he heard a snap. And everything turned black. --- "Dobromir, wake up. You will be late for work." Hearing his grandmother's voice, Dobromir opened his eyes. His whole body was sweaty, his hair was a mess, and his heart was beating as if it had been trying to escape without him. He quickly touched his face, his neck, his chest. Then he turned on his phone camera and stared at his reflection. Unlike the face from the nightmare, this was his plain, below-average face. Two black circles framed his eyes, sunken cheeks hollowed his expression, and messy, thin black hair completed an image that could only be compared to a starving kitten from the street. Not like a cute kitten. A sad one. "Lack of sleep is getting to me. Realistic nightmares like these can only be explained by that." Dobromir shook his head and started his morning routine. Toilet. Quick shower. Washing his face. Brushing his teeth. The sacred ritual of pretending he had his life under control. After that, he entered the kitchen and sat at the table opposite his grandmother, who was already waiting for him before starting breakfast. "Good morning, sleepyhead. Do you think four hours of sleep is enough to live on?" Her voice was a mix of worry and anger. Ah, yes. Morning scolding. 'I cannot imagine a better start to the day.' Dobromir wished her good morning and wisely ignored the second half of her sentence. He started eating. He knew that winning an argument against an angry woman was the dream of fools. Winning an argument against an angry grandmother was something even gods would not attempt. So he chose silence. A noble strategy. Also known as survival. While eating, he scrolled through his phone to check the news and his work email. Soon, he found a message from his boss thanking him for the documents he had sent at 2 a.m. 'You better be grateful, you heartless uncle. I am running on four hours of sleep, mainly because of you.
