I rolled my eyes and laughed, nearly falling off my cloud. "Your dad is a bigger nerd than both of us put together. That man can go toe to toe with me in any mech debate, and come out on top 90% of the time! Literally the most satisfying loss every time he stumps me!" "Haha! True, true, but he does care. He thinks of you like a son," Nathan pointed out. "He better, since you two are the closest things I have to family," I shot back. Nathan was my best friend, and his father, James, was the closest thing I had to a father. After my parents died when I was five, I had been shipped around from home to home, but for the last year and a half, Nathan's father paid for an apartment to live in on his own. My guardians at the time seemed relieved to get rid of me, and I was equally happy to have my own place. I had asked James why he did it, but the man just shrugged without looking from the code he was working on. "You're a good kid that was dealt a shitty hand. You are also the first friend my son has ever had that could not only handle him, but keep up with him," He had said, and then finally broke his eyes from his screen to give me a warm smile. "Plus, I have all this damn money and nothing to do with it other than make the banks happy. Better to use it to help people that deserve it." I had tried to argue that there were people who needed his help more, but that was when he gave me a pointed look that made my throat catch in my throat. "I help those that I think deserve it, not because they need it. I am not so nice, and if I can teach you anything in place of the father missing in your life is that the world is damn cruel, and will chew you up and spit you out to the side without the slightest provocation. You make your own destiny, so you choose who to help and who to stay away from. You deserve help, so just accept it," He had said, and I just shut my mouth, which still made him chuckle. Coming out of my memories, I looked at Nathan, who was staring at me, and nodded. "Who are the others that are playing?" I asked, but my friend only shrugged. "No clue, but I think that my dad is going to actually get in on it this time. For that, I am actually pretty excited," Nathan laughed, but again, it seemed uneasy, and again, I ignored it. "Seriously?" I asked, but then added, "That is low key kind of terrifying, don't you think? his mind makes us look like a pair of monkeys with turd covered sticks sketching in the dirt, yeah?" "No joke," Nathan replied, and then we both burst out laughing. The rest of the evening, we talked about our gaming lives and how we had both played all the VR and AR games, and then the same for books and manga. "So, you ready for school tomorrow? Senior year and all that?" Nathan asked, and I shrugged. "You mean, are you ready to put in your time? School is just a place I have to go to master all the crap they throw at us," I sighed, but it was Nathan's turn to roll his eyes. "Seriously? Isn't there a girl you like, or maybe a dude? Better not be me!" Nathan asked, throwing up his hands defensively, so I sent a blast of ki at him. One of the best parts about virtual space was to conjure whatever you wanted without fear of getting hurt. Without hesitation, Nathan made a lightsaber appear, and deflected the blast back at me, which I narrowly dodged. Virtual conjuration was a two way street after all. "Anyways, there are no girls I like, nor would any want anything to do with a weird looking recluse like me," I groaned, rolling off my cloud like a dead fish, and slapping harmlessly on the white floor. "That's not true. Remember that girl that you helped last year when a bunch of guys were giving her shit? She had the biggest crush on you," Nathan pointed out. "And the moment I tried talking to her, she went from looking at me like a savior to a serial killer. Girls are weird," I grumbled, and Nathan chuckled. "So, a guy?" He asked, and I glared. "Fuck off, man, or I will find a way to hack into your games and mak
