Chapter 8: Insanity "You really didn't notice her? Just how glued to games and your school work were you? Didn't you ever look up from your work to look around your class?" James asked me with a slight bit of exasperation leaking into his voice. I opened my mouth, but closed it. The only girls that had ever been on my radar were the ones in my sci-fi novels and manga, but the real-world was a whole different matter. In fact, if it weren't for Nathan's insistence, I wouldn't be at Ani-CON today. "Okay, so, I may have been a little single minded, and a bit oblivious, but what does me being a reclusive hermit with perfect grades have to do with a random marriage proposal that I am the last to know about?" I asked, the question causing James's eyes to widen. "So, you really had no idea that she was interested in you? I guess Alexander wasn't kidding, but you did meet her today, right?" He asked, and I slowly nodded my head, feeling the heat rise again as my mind attempted to mentally recreate the feeling of my head resting in the girl's lap. "And it seems that if anything, you are at least physically attracted to her, according to the redness of your face." This made me touch my own face, and I let out a sigh that made James give me a strange look. "Sorry, I am just relieved that I was not sick, or she had some kind of special power, or a serial killer.” The pitiful look Mr. Williams gave me made me wince, but then he laughed. "You really need to talk to more people than my son, and to get out more, but that is part of why I have gathered all the testers here. This new game is going to be much different than any other you have played, and you will spend more time in the game than you ever have before." Finally, I felt the pressure let off as the old man started speaking my language. I pushed all thoughts of Ciara and the insanity James had just spewed at me. I could worry about that stuff later. "Yeah, Nathan told me a bit about how it was going to be a no holds barred type of game, or at least for us it will be, right?" I asked, and he smiled at me with a nod. "Yes. This world we have created has all limitations removed, and every class, skill and magic tree are merely skeletons. I created 8 classes, and each of us will be taking one to explore and experiment with over the next ten years in-game," Mr. Williams told me, and my eyes widened. "Ten years? What is this, some kind of time-based experiment? Is the game just going to start up, then shut off when the time is up?" I asked, and the older man chuckled. "No, that was never the plan, and we would be doing nothing but wasting our time if that were the case. One of the key features of the game is the time dilation effect, which should make the ten years pass in roughly 2 and a half months. One week in the real world is an entire year in the game, and with the new helmet and support system, we will be able to do one week at a time. Unfortunately, if you die, you will have to wait till the end of the current week to resurrect, or until everyone else dies. If this happens before the week is up, the world will get reset, and we will all be forced to start over," James explained, and the implications hit me like a ton of bricks. "So, if I die, do I lose all my stuff? And if we all die, does that mean all the data gets deleted?" I asked with a frown, and James nodded. "Man, that is pretty heavy." "It is, but there is a good reason for that. Each one of us are masters of our areas in the gaming world. If all the masters die in a game, then there is a good chance it will be impossible to play for a normal player. That being said, if we need to change things, because of the way the game has been built, it has to be before we make any changes in the world," He informed me, and I nodded. "Yeah, that would suck to try to get a rare drop or something, only for it to vanish when we all die, or even the whole dungeon," I replied, thinking about the many games where I had done the same thing. "
