Chapter 34: Written Inside Me I choked on air. "My—my what?" Her lips curved. "You heard me." I had heard her very clearly, but this was insane. What was wrong with the women that I was meeting lately? Ciara... She had just done the same, sort of. That girl made it out to feel more like a challenge that I needed to achieve, but this woman was just throwing herself at me. I took a deep breath in as Seraphine advanced on me, and silently thanked Ciara for her crash course on beautiful women with personal space issues. Seraphine stopped, inches away. I could smell her: not perfume, but sweet lavender, mixed with the faint scent of sweat. I stood slowly. Seraphine was smaller than me. Slighter. It would be easy to push her back. But I didn't. "So, tell me, Necromancer," she said, her voice husky, "do I tempt you? "No," I said flatly, and it was as if I had struck the woman, and she stumbled back with a stunned look on her face. "What?" She asked, now taking over the confused roll I had been sporting for most of my time in this camp. I sighed, and then gave the woman a weak smile. "Sorry. You are very pretty, but I am already spoken for. Also, you are like twice my age, I am pretty sure. I am only 17, after all." "17? I am only 35, so there shouldn't be a problem, or are customs different in the world you are from?" Seraphine asked. 35? What kind of cradle robbing cougars tent did I just wander into? Was I about to be assaulted for my first time? Was I about to become a man under duress?! Since when was this game rated mature?! "Oh look, the master is broken again," I heard Highlander mutter, and I looked over to the entrance of the tent where my gore covered little murder bot stood, giving me a strained look, intestines still wrapped around his head. Seeing Highlander's gore covered frame pulled me out of my internal struggle, reminding me where I was. "Listen," I said, and took in a breath. "You are quite nice looking, and all that, but I am not here for anything like that. I have someone that is waiting for me... Even if I might never see them again. I get it, you see me and see some answers to problems you have. I am willing to help, but what I want has nothing to do with marriage or your body. I don't need power, but I will need connections, materials, and supplies." The woman gazed into my eyes, and for the first time I noticed that her irises were purple. They almost looked like contacts, except they were too real. "I... see," she said, finally, and she moved to the far side of the room, where she started pouring herself a glass of wine. "What then, can I offer you to get your help?" She said, her voice still strong, even if her body language had changed, showing a little vulnerability. "I am not sure," I admitted, rubbing the back of my head. "Trade when I have my kingdom up and running, if we survive that long. Alric and you have been dancing around whatever is coming to kill you all, and I am starting to wonder if stopping here was a mistake. If you are all supposed to die, then who am I to stop the course of history?" This made the color drain from the woman, and her hand started to shake as real fear gripped the woman. It was unnerving to say the least, and I tried to remain unfazed, but the tension in the air became so thick that I felt as though I was choking on it. "You cannot do that. You cannot leave us here. We are the first, the strongest, and the most loyal," she said, almost pleading. I sighed, and walked up to the woman, taking the glass out of her hand, and setting it on the table beside her. "I don't care what you are if you refuse to give me any information. My life is more important than anyone here because it is my only life," I said, picking up the glass to pour the wine onto the dirt next to the carpet we stood on. "Speak clearly if you want my help, or see if old Matteren will deal with your problem." "You tell her, boss!" Highlander cheered, and leapt at my leg to scale me, but one of the bone hands m
