Chapter 11: Meeting with Mr. Clarence The man that walked in the room looked to be the same age as Nathan's father, but the four men in black suits that followed him made me feel uneasy. It was almost like I could feel a dangerous vibe as soon as they entered the room. I had really thought things like bloodlust and killing intent were just anime and novel concepts, but these men clearly proved there was a basis for it. "Sorry to keep you waiting. My name is Alexander Clarence, and I am the father of the girl you are all competing for. While I don't like to use such crass words when speaking of my pride and joy, I am not a man to sugar coat things. If you want my daughter, you will have to take her from me, and the others," the older man explained, and I could tell that his words were not a threat, but a simple fact. "Sir, are you the CEO of Dynamyx Corp?" I asked, and he chuckled. "I am. What do you want?" He answered, and I shrugged. "Just to say, your VR hardware is top notch. I have tried them all, and none come close to the level of immersion, and clarity in detail like your company. The new line-up is even better, and the AR technology is revolutionary," I told him, and his smile grew. "So, you are the gaming prodigy, Allen. Death March is your title, and my daughter clearly fancies you, but what of it? Do you think that you have what it takes to take my place when I retire? What background and family influence do you have?" He asked, and his gaze was like a laser, pinning me in place, but I smiled at what felt like a predator locked on his prey. "I would say no, and have nothing to offer you," I said, and the room went silent, and then he laughed. "So, you know your place and are willing to compete for my daughter anyway? This is unexpected. Most people are either so arrogant or afraid they don't even think to talk, and the few that do are so full of themselves, I would never allow my daughter to go near them. It is rare that I meet someone so honest and humble," he said, and then walked up to me. I was the shortest, and smallest of the three of us, but when he grabbed me, and looked me in the eyes, I had to fight hard not to tremble. The man was not weak, and there was something about him that screamed danger. I had assumed it was just from the other men, but this guy was no joke. "I will tell you something, Allen. I don't know you, or what will happen in this game, but my daughter is very special. If you are here to fight for her, I expect you to do the best you can. She is not the easiest person, and has a lot of her own ideas, but she is very much like me. When she has her sights set on something, it is almost impossible to dissuade her," he whispered, and then let my shoulders go, and I allowed myself to breathe again. How did a nearly fifty year old man in an expensive suit just make me feel like my life had been in his hands? Never had I felt such an inner terror from another human being as I did when Mr. Clarence's hands grabbed me. I knew that this was his aura, his presence, or whatever you wanted to call it. He was a strong man, and was letting me know that the same thing that Ciara did. I needed to get stronger. Much, much more, and push everything to the limits. This danger I felt was almost addicting, but after feeling it, I wanted it for myself. Only in that moment had I felt like the window I had watched my entire life through had gained a crack. Not a big thing, but it made it slightly harder to see things the way I had before. "Now, you can all join the others to get to know your fellow players. Even if there is a prize, remember that this isn't just about becoming the strongest. This is a game test that will help shape the future path of this groundbreaking game. This is a massive investment, and that means that the winner will be the one that brings the most to the table. It is also the reason why I am willing to place my daughter as a prize and the head of my company that I have built from the ground
