Their first stop was at Greta Kaufmann’s hotel. It was a quick one too. She had simply intended to get her things and check out. After that, she urged Kang Do-Won to help her to the airport on the basis that she intended to ask Merlin some questions and it was safer for their driver to be someone affiliated with the Consortium Guild than otherwise. She also emphasised the point that her interrogation of him would still continue on eventually, but, at the moment, Merlin was of greater importance. The part about Greta interrogating Kang Do-Won caught Merlin off-guard, but considering he was not exactly in the right phase to ask questions not concerning his situation he kept his mouth shut. The sky was a lot darker now as the sun had vanished in the horizon and night was just around the corner, but Merlin’s mind was still plagued with the exact same fright it had had an hour or so ago. He occasionally closed his eyes, wishing that when he opened them again he would awaken from a bad dream. But reality wasn’t so kind to him. It was real. It was all real. And it was high time he surrendered to facts and not fiction. Enough of being a reader who lost himself to fantasies. It was time to face reality. “Begin,” said Greta as she concluded all her calls and the messages she was sending; she was finally settled. Merlin turned to her; all he was met with was her side profile. Her eyes were fixed on the road, watching calmly as Do-Won drove past cars as though in a hurry to get to the airport. Merlin had no clue which country they were headed to, and he was too frightened to ask. In fact, he wondered just how he was to get through the border without his passport with him, but he came to the conclusion that the Council of Mages definitely had their ways. Deciding not to keep Greta Kaufmann waiting for an answer any longer than he already had, he turned away and said, “I have no idea.” “Everyone always says that at first,” she replied. “Okay. I’ll give you five seconds. You can tell me the real answer then.” Merlin’s brows twitched, but he fought back the urge he had to glance at her and frown. Her lackadaisical reaction frightened him. She instantly came across as the type to torture him in some sort of magical way if he insisted he had no idea as to the changes occurring within him. But what else was he to say? There was no way he could tell her about the System. That would only worsen his situation. Goodness. What was this dilemma he was in? “Your time is over,” Greta reminded him as she crossed her legs and folded her arms. “Now, please cooperate.” Merlin pressed his lips together as several lies rushed through his head in half a second. In his desperation, he settled on that which he believed made the most sense to him. He could only hope that it would be the same for Greta. “It started after the headmaster’s maid told me about attunement,” Merlin began. “Apparently it’s a second year course and I wasn’t supposed to be—” “Don’t joke with me, Merlin,” Greta cut in as she turned her gaze to Merlin; there was a frightening glint in her eyes, forcing Merlin to shudder and reconsider his lie. But he had started on this path already, and he was not stopping now because of some pressure. And, besides, he had nothing better to say. “I’m not lying,” said Merlin. “If you don’t plan to believe anything I say, then to hell with this. Do whatever you want.” Greta raised a brow; after a second or two, she turned her attention back to the road. “Go on,” she said. Merlin silently exhaled in relief and continued, “I’ve always been a big fan of meditation, and make sure to partake in it at least five minutes every day. I was doing just that in the headmaster’s personal gym when Maid Eun-Wol met me. She mentioned how my meditation was in alignment with attunement, and gave me tips on how to further strengthen my knowledge of it. Ever since then, I’ve been practicing meditation even more intensely, but instead of focusing on the peace it brought, I shifte
