Chpater 37: Luna An intense pain threatened to split Luna’s head as she got out of her bed, and it had nothing to do with the alarms blaring through the ship. The alarm repeated at a slow rhythm, three bells at 2-second intervals. These were precautionary alerts, telling the people on board to prepare for possible turbulence or combat. Avraham's bed remained untouched. She wondered if the old man ever slept at all; she certainly hadn’t caught him sleeping in the past 2 weeks. Her mind immediately went to the last conversation she had with him, and shuddered once more. The revelation about flaws had certainly drained her spirits. She had been working so hard to gain a shred of power that was truly hers. She could throw it in her father’s face, only to learn that it came with an equally potent handicap. Luna had memorized the rules by heart by now. The standard procedure was to put on a spacesuit and fasten yourself to a bunk or a flight couch. Also, ensure there weren’t any items, no matter how small, left unfastened or unsecured in the space around you. At a high-g burn, anything not bolted down could turn into a little deadly bullet. The alarms currently blazing were only the first of a series; the intervals between bells would shorten as the threat grew closer, until the red lights turned on and the alarms went silent, signaling that the ship had entered active combat. Luna figured she had some time, so she got up and entered the attached locker room next to the training room they had been using as a substitute cabin. She was glad not to have to share the bathrooms with the rest of the crew, one of the perks she actually enjoyed being Avraham’s second in command, if it was in name only. She washed her face and looked at her own reflection. There were huge dark circles under her eyes. She sighed and stepped out, getting her own spacesuit from her locker, and put it on. Before she put on her helmet, she took out her mask, wig, and lens. And just like that, she transformed into Yelena. Who was the perfect picture of well-rested health, if only her internal fatigue could disappear just as easily. She put her helmet on without closing the front, as there was no need yet. She walked out of the captain's cabin and made her way to the bridge. Her flight couch was empty as usual; hers and Avraham’s were reserved solely for them. She got settled into it and observed the rest of the bridge; it seemed like Archie and Riaz were on their breaks, too. Only Niko, from the original team she had met, was on the bridge. That was fine; she liked Niko the best anyway. She quickly opened a terminal and clicked a link to Niko. She quickly typed in a message, not wanting to disturb her on the comms if she was busy. [Hey Niko! What did I miss?] [Hey Yelena, Not much, we’re just approaching the final gateway, to make the jump to our target system. And there seems to be unusual traffic here. We are awaiting further communication from Gate command.] [Is there a risk of a fight?] [If there is, Archie is going to be pissed he missed it.] Luna chuckled to herself at the message; the old pilot really did love to fly. Niko sent her another message. [You alright, kid? The old man isn’t treating you too harshly?] [Nothing I can’t handle, hihihi, thanks for asking Niko.] [Just take proper care of yourself, kid, who knows, some day you’ll be running this ship, and I intend to leverage our friendship for all it’s worth then.] [Oh, is that the only reason you’ve been so kind? You’re a cunning old bag of bones yourself, Niko.] [Watch who you call old, kiddo. Anyway, always a pleasure, Yelena. Let’s get back to it. Before we both earn Avraham's wrath] Luna switched tabs and set up both her screens, such that one mirrored the pilot’s main display and the other mirrored Niko’s. There was no use for cameras or windows in space. Everything was so small against the vastness of space, and moving so incredibly fast that it would have been an exercise in futility, trying t
