Chapter 27: Luna Luna side-stepped the warden’s weapon; she was too slow, and it went straight through her throat. “AGAIN” Luna countered the thrust but committed too much to her attack; her opponent parried her spear and struck her with the other edge of his own. “AGAIN” Luna side-stepped and couldn’t control her sideward motion, falling to the ground. The spearhead came for her neck soon after. “AGAIN” Luna copied the slave’s move perfectly, side-stepping her opponent's thrust, stopping just in time to land a perfect counter blow, which her opponent couldn’t defend against. Something the slave, who somehow wore the robes of a temple apprentice, hadn’t been able to do. It had only taken her 27 tries to land that one perfectly. And those were 27 tries, in which she knew exactly what to expect. She had gained a lot of respect for the slave boy during these training sessions. Luna took off the VR headset. She was in one of the training rooms aboard Avraham’s ship. It was quite spacious. The headset floated in the air, held up by a number of wires and machinery propped on the roof. Usually, she fought Avraham and his knights here; today, she had decided to take on a virtual opponent. To relive the fight that she had been watching again and again for 3 days. The weapon she used, the skinsuit she wore under her exosuit, everything had sensors and impact nodes, meant to stimulate real combat. The Jel released by the suit mostly prevented injuries like that, but Avraham would still insist she go to the medbay for an examination. The computers had done a good job of simulating an opponent as skilled as the one the slave had faced in the broadcasts from Mortrum. She only wished it had also filtered and changed Avraham’s voice, repeating ‘AGAIN’, after each time she died virtually. Maybe she’ll ask the techie, Andry, she hoped she had remembered that right, to actually do it next time. Luna left the training room and entered the lockers. She quickly took a bath and changed out of her exoskeleton and motion-skinsuit beneath. Avraham hadn’t actually been there observing her through the observation panels; the rest of the crew, on their breaks, crowded against. He was back at the bridge, sharing the feed from her headset. As she dressed in her normal uniform and readjusted the HPC into its slot on her arm, a message popped up from Avraham. [Come to the conference room once you’re done.] ‘Thus ends my small, foolish hope for a moment’s peace.’ [Acknowledged] She replied. Luna sighed and stretched her arms. Alone in the locker room, she lay down on the bench and closed her eyes for a few minutes. She opened her eyes to a feeling of heaviness in her chest, which spread all over her body. The bench she was lying on pressed into her back a little more. The gravity had shifted, indicating the ship had entered the increased-acceleration burn. ‘But that wasn’t meant to happen for another hour by her estimate… Oh no,’ She had dozed off. She quickly got up, checked the mirror to see if she was presentable, and walked out, rushing through the one central accessway connecting the entire ship to the conference room. She opened up her HPC while she walked. Avraham hadn’t contacted her again, but there were a few alerts from Niko. Bless her heart, she had messaged asking where she was. ‘Niko could have woken me up. Perhaps they had all found it too entertaining not to let me embarrass myself. ’ Luna sighed. There was a weird dynamic in the ship: people who revered and bowed their necks to Avraham and, by extension, her on account of being his chosen apprentice. And people who were on very friendly terms with Avraham, who did show proper respect in front of others, but in private, it was a whole different dynamic. It had surprised her the fi
