Chapter 32: Zain There was no time to think, Zain rushed forward and grabbed Ash to try and pick him up. The shaking was only getting more intense. Rain tried standing up, but the tremors were too intense; she tried twice, flailed, and fell. The terrible sound didn’t stop; it still pierced the core of his chest, but it was the shaking that put the fear of death in his heart. Ash started fighting him, punching him with his one good hand. He was screaming something at him, but Zain couldn’t hear him. Whether it was because of the terrible sound of the planet groaning or because Zain didn’t want to listen to his words, Zain manhandled him; he was, after all, wearing the bulkier models of the exosuits. He picked him up and hung him over his shoulder with his face and upper body hanging off his back. Cracks had begun forming all along the room’s walls. Even the ground seemed ready to split open and consume all of them. Zain didn’t know if he could get out of the house in time. Ash was his mission. Zain spared a look at Rain and cursed himself for having done so. She seemed to be smiling, as if she knew of the turmoil in his heart. She mouthed a thank you, shattering his heart. Zain cursed the universe. Why in flame was Rain so much like his mother? Rain’s fear was still evident on her face despite her smile, as Zain turned around. A huge shower of dust rained down on them; the roof was about to give. Zain tried to run when he suddenly staggered and screamed, though it was drowned by the terrible groaning seemingly coming from everywhere. Ash had bitten his neck. Enough to draw blood, enough to break skin, Zain loosened his grip on him, causing him to break free from him. Ash fell, his eye was bleeding again, and the stitches on his hand and face had probably come undone. Ash’s right arm had come free from its sling, so he made use of both his arms. He half-crawled and half-threw himself towards his mother. By the time he reached her, he was trembling. Time slowed down to a crawl. Ash was desperately holding onto Rain. Rain's eyes were closed, and the roof was collapsing on top of them. Zain lunged forward and forcibly shoved Ash and Rain tightly together, making their combined bodies as small as he could. He then dropped on top of them, bracing himself on his hands and knees, using his back to shield them. Ash didn’t react; maybe he wasn’t even aware of what Zain was about to do, having already prepared himself to die by his mother's side. Rain caught on, her reaction almost lightning fast, and quickly wrapped her hands around the back of Zain's head. The only part of him not covered by the exoskeleton. Zain hung over the slave mother and her miracle child as Rain’s house came crashing down on all three of them.
