Chapter 50: Ash and the train of emotions As the train stopped in front of him, Ash immediately began moving through each car. Although he tried to move quickly, there was one specific car he was looking for — the one with Rain and Miru. These were all his people, hurting, or with loved ones who were hurt. Ash knew most of them would have preferred to be out there fighting with him. So he stopped for a kind word here, a greeting there, never for too long. The first car he truly paused in held the remaining children of his settlement and their parents. The severely injured had been gathered on one side, while the others had been hurriedly placed wherever there was room. Ash took his time with the people in this car, especially the children. Rain had made him responsible for all of them. He was their elder brother. These kids were his responsibility, his duty. Ash might have been closest to Spark and Miru only because they were the oldest and had been around the longest. Ash moved through the children and their parents, taking his time talking to them, until he finally reached Spark. Spark’s whole leg had been amputated. As Ash approached, the boy was drinking from a water bottle his mother held to his lips while his father helped keep him upright. Spark looked a little drowsy, probably because of all the medication he was on. His parents looked exhausted. As Ash came near, Spark’s mother stared at her son for a long moment, then looked away. His father managed a small smile. Spark himself looked up at Ash, his eyes slowly focusing. Despite everything, he managed a smile too. “Hey, Ash.” “Hey, Sparky. How are you doing?” Spark gave him a long look. “Oh, me? I’m fine, super really,” he said slowly. “I don’t have a leg anymore. So I won’t be able to help you or do much of anything anymore, will I, Ash?” Ash forced himself to smile. He hated himself for it because he finally understood why Zain smiled like that so often. It was fake. Completely fake. Inside, Ash was burning with anger. But he couldn’t let that show. For Spark, he had to be reassuring. “What? You think a missing leg will stop someone as stubborn as you?” Ash replied. “No, I don’t think so. And don’t worry. As soon as we get off this planet, we’ll get you a new leg. One that’s gonna be way better than the one you had. It’ll be so good you’ll want to chop off the other one just to have it replaced as well.” Spark stared at him for a second. “Really? Will it make me stronger? As strong as when you and the rebels wear those metal suits?” Ash nodded. “I’ll make sure it’s even better.” That seemed to settle Spark. It was as if a weight had been lifted from the boy’s mind. His parents were smiling now, both of them genuinely. His father even mouthed a quiet thank you. Then Spark asked suddenly, “How’s Miru? Where is she? I don’t see her here.” Ash paused. “Ma and Pa don’t want to say,” Spark continued. “I know they’re hiding something. You won’t lie to me, will you, Ash? Where is Miru?” Ash hesitated. He wasn’t supposed to tell anyone about Zain’s abilities. If word spread too far, every desperate parent with an injured child would start hunting for his miracle cure. They would stop at nothing to get to him. Zain was barely keeping Miru alive as it was. “She’s here,” Ash said at last. “The rebels are taking care of her. Don’t worry. She was hurt worse than you, but she’ll recover. You just have to be strong for her, alright? Can’t let her see you weak.” Spark nodded, seeming content enough with that. Ash moved on. By the time he left the children’s car, his face was tight, and his hands were clenched into fists. He kept them that way until he finally reached the car he had been searching for. Just as he was about to enter, two rebel medics came out carrying a makeshift gurney with Spring on it, her partner rushing alongside them. Ash called after them at once. “Is everything alright?” “We’re taking her somewhere more comfortable,” one of them called back. “She might delive
