“There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky; there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul.” ― Victor Hugo, Les Misérables He stopped as he tried to calm down, taking in the scene, trying to reassess the situation. The wagon continued to creak as the huge beast pulled it. He suddenly noticed the pungent smell that permeated all over the wagon, as the different passengers clung to each other like skin. “Excuse me, Mister in front, can you not let out bodily fluid in such a cramped space?” Felix said in Sumerian, addressing a skinny, unresponsive man who was now leaking out unknown body fluids. He could tolerate all kinds of discomfort, but this was really just too much. The man did not move at all nor respond to his call; oddly enough, the rest of the people in the wagon looked up at him in confusion. It was almost as if they couldn’t understand him. There was no time to mull over whether they understood him or not; the man leaking fluids had been unresponsive for some time, apart from Felix, a few other passengers complained, yelling and shuffling away from him. None of them spoke to him in Sumerian. Oh no “Excuse me, that guy over there is not responsive”, Felix said to the big man watching over their wagon in fluent Sumerian. He was one of the villagers, so he should be able to understand him. “ ‡θ∑§ ∞∫ * !……… ‡θ∑§ ∞∫ !” The man yelled as he whipped Felix in annoyance, gesturing at him to shut up as he got back to chewing on a stick. He really couldn’t understand; he spoke in Sumerian. Why could he not understand? “Would you give up already? They don’t understand you,” The quiet elf-like woman in front said, screaming at him half abashedly. Felix ignored the whip that landed on his back and even her stand-offish tone as he focused on her words. It was in Sumerian. He turned his head, grazing his hand across the barbed wire as he asked the woman back in excitement. “You speak Sumerian?” The elf woman rolled her eyes, looking elsewhere as she ignored Felix. Her necklace, made of red thread and an oak pendant, dangled briefly against the blinding sun. 𒀀𒇉. Felix subconsciously spelt out the word on the pendant. “Ida” The elf woman’s ears perked up as she subconsciously turned to look at Felix. When she realised what she had done, she turned back around in annoyance. So her name was River, what a peculiar name The guard chewing the stick did not seem to mind the interaction, as he happily chewed his stick while chatting to some guards in the carriage in front. As for the rest of the people on the carriage, they looked lifeless, almost too tired to even care. Felix sighed, not minding her attitude at all as he calculated his chances. Apart from the obvious issue of possibly being a deity sacrifice, the other issue was that nobody here seemed to speak any languages he knew except the elf. He didn’t believe the ledger sent him to this testament for no reason; he just had to figure out the intention. As weird as the entire situation was, he had to adapt quickly to the changing weirdness; he could only hope there was a chance for him to go back to his world back in Hallow. He had no intention to spend any longer than necessary in this hell scape. Worse of all, his number one life-saving method was currently compromised; both his hands and feet were bound, so he could not retrieve the pocket watch. He sat still and took a deep breath, clearing his head while looking out for clues. He would need to save his energy if he wanted an opening out of this unredeemable situation. After a few miles, the guards got out to give the strange beast some water. Felix’s mouth watered as he looked at the greedy beasts currently swallowing huge mouthfuls of water. The remaining guards stayed close to the wagon, closely monitoring every single captive. As if they could run . Felix had already closely checked the bindings, not only where the heavy chains tightly wrapped, there were also reinforced with
