I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance. -Socrates The pin-drop silence was resumed by the sound of Felix’s heart beating in near panic. So he was dead? But alive? So he had definitely died that night. It was not some miracle that resurrected him, but the pocket watch. The panic he felt was mostly due to the countdown timer, but also to uncertainty. What was the purpose of his resurrection? The ink on the ledger shifted again as a new line carved itself beneath the rest. Next Testament: Pending Next Testament? What did that even mean? His attention suddenly shifted as the words twisted and churned against the page, dancing around until it suddenly became Testament I: Undying Hunger Felix stared at the words, trying to make sense of them. The ledger did not even give him a moment to process what the words meant before it rolled up violently, shutting with a loud snap. The archive around him spun continuously as the room blurred, disappearing from his vision. Then it suddenly collapsed inward, folding into darkness as the world spun violently around him. His stomach twisted, nausea surging as his vision blurred into streaks of shadow and light. The motion sickness almost gave him the urge to clear out his bowels; he closed his eyes to adjust to the change in light. A sudden searing pain in his back forced his eyes open as he continued to blink, trying to adjust to the change in environment. The sting was so gut-wrenching that he tried to open his mouth to let out a sharp cry of pain. Instead, he let out an awkward croak as his lips stung with pain. His mouth was too dry to let out any sound. His vision finally focused on his tan, bony body. Huh? Who is this As he was marvelling in confusion at the change in his body composition, he noticed his dark wool trousers and waistcoat had been replaced by tattered clothes that barely covered him. He felt the sting of a fly on his back as he subconsciously lifted his hand to itch at the discomfort; the chain on his hand rattled the barbed wires, stinging and tightening as he moved. Chains? Where am I? Who am I? Am I dead? Is this the procession to the underworld? He was soon awakened from his stupor as he heard the furious bellowing from a relatively large man wearing strange airy clothes. He raised his hand high, connecting the whip on his hand to Felix’s back “……. ‡θ∑§ ∞∫ !….. ‡θ∑∞∫ !” The man barked in supposed gibberish, his voice sharp with irritation. Felix reacted quickly and reasonably dragged his tired body away, trying not to incur the wrath of the buff man, as he thought silently to himself. What the hell is he saying? As someone who usually prided himself on being a language natural, he was stumped that he couldn’t find a variant of language close to what the buff man was speaking. He noticed that apart from the buff man, there were other people holding whips and thoroughly whipping anyone who moved or resisted on the wagon. By the side, there was a crowd of people watching the whipping procession routinely and going about their usual lives, laughing and discussing amongst themselves with the same ineluctable language; they all had similar features. A bit taller than usual, but very strong looking, even the children, the sick and the old, they had sharp eyes and lips shaped like a line. Felix reassessed and thought to himself. It may not be that they are taller, but that my current body is on the smaller side There was no presence of steam or any machinery, only crude machinations. Most things were built with earth, wood and grass, and all the buildings were about two men tall. This should be some sort of a primitive village or a town He had the urge to cry. Why was he so curious about the pocket watch? It was almost like he had a natural talent for seeking death. He jerked back and almost screamed in terror when he looked up at the giant golden object in the sky. A yellow sun? His fear was overcome by another sudden whip from another fat man in front as he screamed a
