Chapter 39: Escape "How am I alive?" Elyndra said with an evil smile on her face. "I've always had a backup plan, as I knew this day would come. So I finally accepted my role as Rina's fourth Demon General, which has granted me powers I could only have dreamed of. No longer do I have to play the role of support in the background. I can now fight as well as any mage on the battlefield." As she was speaking, Thamiel was slowly gathering magic in his left arm behind his back, ready to unleash his holy fire. Thamiel quickly glanced at the other two heroes, noticing they were preparing to attack as well while he continued to distract Elyndra with questions. "No, this makes no sense. Even if you just became a Demon General, a transformation does not grant spells of this power." Elyndra then pointed her finger at him as green and black mana gathered at its tip. "Do you think I sat back and did nothing all these years? I had a perfect specimen next to me this entire time. I was constantly studying the curses your filthy goddess placed on Rachel. Over the years, I've learned from them and studied them, merging them and creating new magical spells that you've already had firsthand experience with. Didn't you enjoy my Hex flame? how did the healing go by the way" She glanced at his half burnt melted face and continued. "Not well from the looks of it." "Damn bitch" Thamiel barked "Anyways where was I? oh yes." "I have an entire arsenal of spells that I created long ago. I just didn't have the proficiency to use them due to not being skilled in offensive magic. But this transformation changed everything." "Now let's see you suffer from the same curses your goddess casts upon Rachel." The mana Elyndra had gathered on her fingertip finally activated. She knew the three of them were preparing attacks and did not want to give them the chance to build up the required mana. As she called out the name of the spell... "Mana Hex." The moment she spoke the words, all three heroes moved. They tried to activate their attacks as well, but Elyndra had already gained the initiative. Greenish-black mana shot from her finger, branding a mark onto Kino's and Thamiel's necks as it burned itself into their skin. But even with the attack landing, neither Thamiel nor Kino wavered. Kino raised the magical firearm she had been secretly charging with an immense amount of mana. And Thamiel held his holy flames forward, ready to unleash them upon Elyndra and Rachel. Simultaneously, a loud bang rang out as Kino's weapon fired while Thamiel called out the name of his spell. "Holy Fireball!" Both projectiles shot forward toward Elyndra and Rachel. But Elyndra didn't even flinch. With a casual wave of her hand, she cast a spell. "Magic Barrier." A shimmering barrier sprang to life as the mana bullet and holy fireball slammed into it. Both attacks exploded upon impact, their power dispersing across the surface of the barrier. For a moment, all around Rachel and Elyndra, nothing could be seen except holy flames covering the barrier in a blinding light. Until a loud shattering sound echoed through the barrier. Unlike the other two, Garek had simply charged forward. He swung his earthen blade toward the barrier, aiming straight for Elyndra. But then, inches from Elyndra's head, another spell was called out from behind her. A reddish-black barrier of blood burst into existence between Garek's blade and Elyndra. Garek forced all of his weight into the strike as cracks slowly spread across the blood barrier, but it bought Elyndra just enough time to get out of the way as the blade passed by her, striking nothing but air. Then Garek suddenly froze as screams rang out from behind him. Where Kino and Thamiel were screaming in pain. He quickly jumped back and turned to help them, but there was nothing attacking them. As he took a closer look, he saw black veins protruding from the brands Elyndra had cast upon them. The veins spread rapidly across their bodies as they continued to
