Chapter 12: Nine Lives Left The knights approached Rachel step by step, but before they could even close half the distance, a flash of darkness appeared between them and Rachel. Bladed wings swung out in a wide arc. The slash was so fast the angels did not even have time to scream. Their armor split apart alongside their bodies in one clean strike. Pieces of silver armor and flesh crashed into the blood-soaked grass as dark red puddles spread beneath the lifeless remains. The scent of iron quickly filled the air. Sophie slowly turned toward Rachel. The anger on her face was immediate the moment she realized Rachel was still conscious. Rachel weakly lifted her head a fraction. “Mother Sophie…” Sophie then gave Rachel a terrifying look as she started to scold her. “We told you to stay in the castle where it was safe. You are lucky one of the demons caught sight of you running toward the battlefield and found me just in time to inform me what you had done after he lost sight of you.” Her sharp eyes narrowed further. “If I had arrived even a little later, you would have been dead.” Her voice carried genuine fear beneath the anger. “Prepare yourself for a scolding when we get back to the castle. Especially once your mother hears about this.” Rachel weakly looked up at her. “I’m sorry, Mother Sophie… I just wanted to help.” Sophie immediately closed the distance toward her while reaching into thin air as a healing potion appeared in her hand out of nowhere. Unlike healing magic, which did not affect Rachel at all, healing potions could at least stop the bleeding and slightly mend wounds. It was enough to keep her alive. She quickly kneeled beside Rachel, whose consciousness was barely hanging on. Sophie uncorked the potion and poured it directly into the massive wound on Rachel’s chest. The liquid hissed softly against the torn flesh before she poured more over Rachel’s mangled arm and leg. Some of the bleeding immediately began to slow. “Open your mouth.” Rachel tried to respond, but she did not have the strength left. Her body barely moved. Sophie let out a frustrated breath before grabbing Rachel’s jaw and forcing her mouth open. She pulled out another healing potion seemingly from nowhere before biting down on the cork with her teeth. Pop. She ripped the cork free and spat it onto the grass. Then she immediately began pouring the potion down Rachel’s throat. “Swallow.” Rachel barely managed to obey. The potion slid into her stomach, but only moments later she suddenly coughed violently. Blood spilled from her mouth as Rachel’s blood splattered across Sophie’s face. Sophie quickly examined her body. The bleeding from Rachel’s wounds had finally stopped, and some of the torn flesh had partially closed. It was far from healed, but it was enough. “All right… this is good enough. We need to get you back to the castle and get you proper treatment.” Sophie carefully lifted Rachel into her arms. As she turned, her eyes suddenly locked onto Elyndra lying unconscious a short distance away. Sophie immediately held out one hand and called out a spell. “Healing Pulse.” A wave of green magical energy shot toward Elyndra, enveloping her as a glowing dome of healing energy instantly formed around the fairy. The dome pulsed like a heartbeat. Each pulse washed over Elyndra’s tiny body, slowly repairing the damage she had suffered. Cuts closed one after another while bruising faded away beneath the warm green light as the internal damage from the knights’ kicks disappeared like they had never happened. After several pulses, all visible damage had disappeared. Sophie walked over and carefully bent down before picking up the unconscious Elyndra. She gently placed the fairy on top of Rachel. Sophie then quickly ran toward the battlefield while carrying both of them in her arms. Her eyes rapidly scanned the chaos below for someone trustworthy enough to hand them off to. Explosions of magic and flashes of steel lit up the battlefield in every direction
