Chapter 53: The Price of Victory Throughout the city, battles raged in the streets and alleyways as the angels and demons fought one another. Explosions erupted, and civilians fled. Any angel that took to the sky was instantly sniped out of the air by the elven archers as the demon army made sure there were no survivors. Screams of death and destruction echoed throughout the city. Lyssara then approached Loria, who had just finished off a knight, and she spoke. "Have you seen Rachel? Her mother kept me at her side to make sure she didn't do anything stupid." Loria turned as she wiped her brow. "I saw her heading toward the cathedral. She seemed to be chasing the Wind Hero." "All right. Come with me." Loria then stabbed the squirming angel at her feet until it stopped moving, then turned to follow. The two then turned, glancing toward the cathedral in the distance as they battled their way there. Meanwhile, out in the street just before the cathedral, Grant charged at full speed toward Rachel and Ruri. As he rushed at them with all his strength, Rachel spoke to Ruri without taking her eyes off Grant. "Go ahead and step out of the way. I'll take care of him." Rachel then charged her blade. As cursed power emanated from the sword, the grumbling curse returned as it slithered into her mind. "Cursed One, you just started feeding me moments ago, and now you're using the blood up all over again. This had better be worth it." Rachel replied in an irritated voice. "We're on a battlefield, and this fight is almost over. I'll take you around the entire city and fill you up with all the dead angels once this is over. Just calm down and wait." "You'd better, Cursed One. Or I'll take control and make sure I'm fed properly." The curse then disappeared back into Rachel's soul, clearing her mind once more. Rachel then charged forward to meet Grant's incoming assault as she dragged her massive blade across the ground. Right before they collided, she swung it upward as she called out the name of her cursed ability. "Scarlet Explosion!" The sword slammed into the shields, denting them, but Grant held the attack back as he poured all of his strength into resisting her massive blade. A small grin appeared on his face. Moments later, that smile vanished as an explosion of blood erupted beneath his feet, launching him high into the air. He spun like a ragdoll until the spell's force finally ended. Before he began to fall, he spread his wings wide and flapped them. He was now painted head to toe in cursed blood. New cracks spread across his shield, and he knew it could no longer withstand another strike like that. It had already been heavily damaged while protecting him from the crushing force of the fallen goddess's statue. Grant dropped one of his shields and reached into the satchel at his waist, pulling out a glowing potion. He quickly uncorked it and chugged it down. A golden aura burst around his body. His muscles swelled even further, his eyes glowed a brilliant gold, and a fanatical smile spread across his face. Now brimming with power, he charged forward with every ounce of strength he had. "For the goddess!" He dive-bombed straight toward Rachel. Rachel pulled her blade back once more, waiting for him to come within range as she poured even more of the curse's power into it. The blade grew brighter and brighter as a black and crimson aura enveloped it. The instant he was within reach, Rachel swung downward with all of her strength as she called out the spell's name. "Blood Flash!" The moment the blade fell, a crimson line appeared from Grant's head to his groin. His body split cleanly in two as each half separated. Blood and entrails burst into the air before both halves crashed to the ground just beyond Rachel. After Grant's body hit the ground, the cursed blade greedily drank up all the blood as Rachel looked around. Lazard couldn't have gotten far. She soon spotted a bloody trail from where she had left him, leading straight to the cathed
