Chapter 9: The Beginning of Defiance Ten years had passed. Rina and all of the others, along with Rachel, had now moved into the castle that Elyndra mentioned. And right now, they were in a warm room sitting next to a crackling fireplace. Around the table sat Rachel, Elyndra, Durog, and Lyssara. Rachel sat there as she listened to stories about her father and the adventures they had with him. Rachel sat there curiously listening to everything they said. Durog was sitting there boasting about one of their epic adventures. His tan skin reflected the orange glow of the fireplace while his red eyes glimmered with excitement as he spoke. Thick horns protruded from his forehead and curved upward above his white beard, giving him an imposing appearance that fit his role as one of Rina's demon generals. Across from him sat Lyssara, whose ashen-gray skin contrasted against her long white hair. Her piercing red eyes narrowed in annoyance as a single crimson horn pierced out from the center of her forehead. Even sitting there in silence, the demonic elf carried an intimidating presence. Until Lyssara finally cut in. "Shut your trap, dwarf. That's not how it happened. Stop exaggerating everything." "You're no fun, elf. When telling stories, it must be entertaining, especially for little runts like her." Then Elyndra cut in. Unlike the other two, Elyndra still looked exactly as she did ten years ago. Her soft fairy wings shimmered faintly in the warm light of the fireplace while her long hair gently rested over her shoulders. There were no horns protruding from her head, no demonic changes within her appearance. Even after all these years, Elyndra had still refused to accept the demon general power that Rina had offered her. She remained the same fairy she had always been, still focused on helping Rachel. "Come on, both of you, stop arguing in front of Rachel." They stopped and looked at her for a moment. And then Durog grinned. "Fine, I could never say no to you, fairy. Oh, by the way, this is for you, Rachel." Durog pulled out a metal case carved with dwarven designs all over it. The corner was held by a metal chain necklace. And he said, "A long time ago, your father Logan and I were bored and we didn't want to waste our money, so we started betting and gambling using our belongings. And luckily, I won. And this is one of the things I won from him. Take it and open it." He tossed the metal case necklace to Rachel as she looked at the intricate dwarven designs and details on it. She then saw the little switch on it that she pushed, which popped open the lid. As it opened, a little card was inside. She pulled it out and looked at it and started to read it out loud. Reading from the top of the card, it said, "Driver's License." Then she continued to read the next line. "Logan Davis." And then she focused on the picture on the card, staring at the image of him. Rachel looked at the picture in shock. "This is my father?" Durog said, "Yes, that's what I won from him in the gamble. Apparently, on his world, this is a type of identification. And I know you've never seen him before or had anything from him. But this came directly from his world, and I thought you should have it." Tears started to roll down Rachel's face, as this was the first time she could put a face behind all the stories everybody told her about her father. But then Durog asked, "By the way, how were you able to read that language? I can't seem to understand it." Rachel wiped her tears and spoke. "Growing up, Mother and Elyndra taught me how to read and speak my father's language, as he taught them when he was here." "Ah, I see," Durog said in a cheery voice as he laughed. "Good for you, child. I unfortunately never got to learn it. Maybe I'll have Elyndra and Rina teach me as well." Then suddenly, Sophie entered the room with Rina following right behind her. Unlike the weak and broken woman she once was, Sophie now looked healthy and full of life. Her black angel wings reste
