Chapter 49: Hidden Within the Mist The ground quaked and rumbled, but nobody knew what the spell was actually doing. With each pulse, the earth shook more violently, yet nothing happened. Then a massive tremor struck. The ground violently shook as every crack, every crevice, and every dip or hole throughout the city was instantly filled with rock-hard stone. Water lines and sewage pipes beneath the city burst upward as they were crushed by the compacting earth. But that was not what the demons had planned with this spell. In the next moment, the massive moat surrounding the city suddenly erupted as it became completely filled with solid stone. With nowhere else to go, the water burst outward in a massive wave. The torrent slammed into the backs of the armored angels, knocking them off their feet as the rushing water dragged them straight toward the waiting demon army. Demon Commander Loria raised her weapon and screamed, "Now... kill them all!" Swords, spears, and axes belonging to the demons, dwarves, and elves came crashing down upon the angels as they struggled to regain their footing. Across the battlefield, nothing could be heard but the screams of dying angels as their blood soaked into the now muddy ground. Thamiel stood atop the wall, listening to their cries as he looked down at the battlefield. The protective moat surrounding the city was gone, leaving only the battered and damaged wall standing between the demon army and the city. He then turned to survey the damage within the city. Elite angels gagged and vomited while others staggered on their feet as the sewage forced to the surface by the spell spread a foul stench throughout the streets. Lazard pinched his nose as he grimaced. "Oh, this smell's horrible. What'd those damn devils do?" Thamiel looked over the battlefield before answering. "This is an unconventional earth spell. It seems to have compacted and filled every gap beneath the city, forcing everything underground to the surface." His expression hardened. "With a single spell, they've completely changed the battlefield." He turned toward the heroes. "Go. Regroup with the soldiers below. With the moat gone, they'll breach the city with ease. Prepare for battle." Lazard nodded before turning and leaping from the wall. Wind magic swirled around him, slowing his descent as he landed effortlessly on the ground. Four individuals immediately ran over to meet him. The first was Grant, a giant hulking man clad in full plate armor. He wielded two enormous shields, while a pair of angel wings, also covered in armor, extended from his back. He served as the tank of Lazard's party. The second was Serena, the group's mage. She looked remarkably similar to Thamiel in her priestly robes. She carried a staff in one hand and wore a veil covering her face, hiding her hideous scars. Next was Wade. He wore leather armor, and his body was covered in countless scars from the hundreds of battles he had survived. A short sword rested at each hip. The last was Kurt, a tall, fit angel who wielded a spear. The moment Lazard touched down, Grant spoke. "Hero, is it time for us to move?" "Unfortunately, yes. We need to get to the front gate and prepare. It shouldn't take long before the demons break through." A fanatical grin spread across Wade's face. "Finally... we get to clash with the Hero Slayer again. Isn't this great?" Lazard answered, instantly shifting from the cowardly man who had spoken privately with Katerina to the boastful, fearless hero he portrayed before the other angels. "Yes. And this time, we will kill her." He raised his head confidently. "With the Goddess on our side, our teamwork, and my heroic power, the Hero Slayer doesn't stand a chance." Each member of his party returned his words with eager grins, the fanatical devotion in their eyes shining through. "Now make sure you're all ready. Because the moment that gate breaks... none of us will get a chance to rest until we've achieved victory." Outside the wall, R
