Chapter 35: The Knight in Black Steel Rachel continued to rush through the basement, working her way toward the stairwell leading up to the ground floor. As she was running past the many rooms, she stopped for a moment as she caught sight of something. She turned toward the door, hearing a commotion coming from within. "Looks like this is the end of the line for you demons." Three angels stood in front of three heavily wounded guards. Behind them was a guard who had already been struck down, along with two maids standing next to his corpse. But then the maids bent down and grabbed the weapons from his deceased body. One maid shakily held a spear forward as it trembled in her hand, jolts of terror running through her body. Beside her stood the other maid, wielding the dead guard's short sword as it shook back and forth in her grasp. Then they approached the guards who were barely hanging on, moments away from collapsing. "Please hold on. We will help." They held their weapons forward, standing right alongside them as the angels took steps closer, ready to strike once more. But then, out of the corner of the terrified maid's eye, a massive greatsword swung sideways. It easily cut all three angels in half as their upper bodies fell to the floor, followed by their lower halves a moment later. The blood from the angels' bodies was quickly pulled into the blade of the sword, feeding its hunger and storing more blood within to power her cursed armor's abilities. The shaky maid looked at Rachel in her full set of armor. Rachel's piercing red eyes shining through the helmet caused the maid to look away from her gaze as she spoke while still holding the spear that was shaking in her hands. "Who... Who are you?" But Rachel did not bother answering. She turned back toward the door, disappearing from their sight as she burst down the corridor. "Do you know who that was, boss?" A guard took a step forward, watching Rachel disappear out the door. Then he turned toward the senior guard for answers. "I have no idea. I've never seen that person here before in my life. But did you see how strong they were? Our best bet of surviving now is to stick with that person. So let's get out of here." The senior guard stepped forward, heading down the hall in the direction Rachel had disappeared. The maids and guards followed right behind him. But the group started to slow down a bit. Passing through the hallway felt completely different and somewhat eerie. Dismembered bodies of angels from earlier battles lay scattered alongside fallen demon guards, mixed with freshly killed enemies that had not been there before. The strange thing was that there was no blood at all. All the blood that had once splattered the walls and floor was now gone. Every corpse they passed looked like a withered husk encased in armor, as every drop of blood had been siphoned from their bodies. Then one of the maids at the back spoke. "Are you sure it's alright to be following this person?" She glanced around while carefully stepping over the dried husks littering the hallway. Eventually, they spotted Rachel in the distance as she turned and headed up the stairs. Moments later, two screams echoed through the stairwell. Two angels came tumbling down the stairs Rachel had just ascended. Their dismembered bodies crashed against the steps before slamming into the bottom of the stairwell one after another. Then, moments later, blood poured from their severed bodies and flew back up the stairwell, racing toward the direction Rachel had disappeared. Rachel then appeared, exiting part of the crumbling castle as she rested her massive greatsword on her shoulder. She scanned the courtyard overlooking the battle as demons and angels fought for their lives. Unfortunately, the demons were on their last legs. Only a few pockets of resistance remained throughout the courtyard as the angels' overwhelming numbers finally began breaking down their defensive formations. Then she spotted them. In the
