Chapter 44: Battle's End Rachel and Elyndra sat there, leaning against the lone piece of wall still standing as the remaining angels approached, but then suddenly came to a halt. Footsteps came rushing from the side and behind as the maids and demon guards moved in front of Rachel and Elyndra, holding their spears forward. The angels looked at the injured guards and maids and burst into laughter, knowing these weakened defenders stood no chance. Then a guard at the front raised his spear and called out, "This is it, men. Standing before us is a Demon Lord spawn and the fallen hero Elyndra. Once we kill them, we will have completed our goddess's mission. Now everybody, charge!" All the angels charged forward with their weapons held high. But then suddenly, angels started falling as a hail of arrows shot forward from within the tree line, precisely striking some of them. The arrows pierced through armor, sending angels collapsing to the ground. The angels halted once more. "Shields up! We got archers!" Then, from within the forest, more demon guards emerged through the trees, along with some maids. All of them looked weakened, battered, and bloody, no better than the guards who had arrived first. A second group appeared from the other side of the wall. More maids and a few demon guards burst from the tree line and rushed toward Rachel and the others, reinforcing their defensive formation. A group of maids then hurried over to Rachel and sat down beside her with worried looks on their faces. "Princess, you're okay! I thought after that hero sent you flying from the throne room, the worst had happened to you. We were all so worried." Rachel's half-open eyes scanned the maids, realizing they were the same ones she had protected in the throne room. She spoke with a weak voice. "How did you all manage to survive?" One of the maids, digging through her sack, pulled something out and held it up. "After you were thrown through the window, the hero didn't even bother with us and went straight after you. We fled and eventually came across these guards, who have been helping keep us safe." She held out a small bottle. "Here. It's a healing potion. The last one left. Please drink it, Princess." The maid tried to hand Rachel the potion, but Rachel spoke. "Sorry, but I can't move my arms. Just feed it to me." The maid popped the cork and carefully poured the contents down Rachel's throat. Rachel gulped it down as the potion slowly began healing her wounds, though not enough to cause any major recovery due to her curse. Then the angels started advancing once more, their formation tightening as they moved. The angel leading the group shouted out, "They're all still battered and weak! We can still finish this! As long as we kill the princess and the hero, we will have succeeded, and we will be rewarded by our goddess in the afterlife! So attack with everything you have!" The angels collided with the guards as swords slashed and spears thrust. A dozen arrows rained down from overhead. Angels, guards, and maids began falling one by one as they brutally slaughtered each other. Finally, the formation broke. The angels pushed through the defenders and headed straight for Rachel and Elyndra. One angel burst through the line and slammed his shield into the maids forming a wall around Rachel, knocking them to the ground. As one maid screamed, "No, Princess!" she stretched out her hand, desperately trying to stop the attack. Rachel looked up to see a sword slashing down toward her. The angel's face was twisted with fanatic devotion. But then the angel suddenly stilled. Two black blades burst through his chest, lifting him off his feet. With a mighty pull, the angel was ripped in half as blood splattered all over Rachel. Rachel looked behind him and saw someone she never expected. Weakly, she called out, "Mother Sophie." The moment she saw her, relief washed over her. Mother Sophie. I will leave the rest to you. Rachel then finally let her consciousness f
