Chapter 139: My Beloved Francia (End of Book 2) Lucius and the young emperor stood in solemn vigil before Charlemagne’s body. With his death, they had done it. The demons’ wretched influence over the continent had at last been vanquished. For ten years the nonsensical things ran amok and laid waste to all caught in their ravenous path. But no more. Francia, and every other nation, was now free to look toward the future so full of promise. “How do you feel, Karolus?” Lucius asked him. “The war is over. When you return, it shall be to a hero’s welcome.” Karolus shook his head. “I’m not the only one who deserves to be called that. It’s only because of the brave soldiers, the other lords, and even the beastkin that I can stand here now. I merely dealt the final blow. What gave my sword strength back then was the culmination of their hopes, their trust that I’d see them through the dawn.” Charlemagne was truly a terrifying foe. Only when his body was mauled by the Beast Lord, and his tears were exhausted until no more Evils could be summoned, did Karolus barely scrape by and emerge victorious after fighting from sunset to the sunrise. Even now the young man struggled to keep his eyes open, leaning on his blade’s handle and somberly watching as the morning filled the world in a shower of purple and gold. Perhaps he should’ve been ecstatic that his nation’s long reviled enemy was finally gone, but right now he merely wished to give Charlemagne, the him of another time, another possibility, a proper farewell. “Would it be okay if you left me alone for a bit, Lucius?” he said, leaning down and placing a soft hand on Charlemagne’s chest. “Though the Demon King was responsible for many tragedies, he is still a son of Francia, so I want to conduct a rite that his spirit may find guidance to the embrace of our Mother.” “Of course, my friend. Take as long as you need.” With a tip of his tophat, Lucius sauntered away and then indulged in a pleasant walk through the golden fields the Demon King so dearly treasured. It was in times like these that it did a fellow good to be thoughtful, to take a while and reflect on one’s recent memories and adventures. The gentleman truly had an enjoyable time in the World of Charlemagne—or should he call it the World of Karolus now? He met many people, many beautiful seeds who sprouted into something special, so raw and tender in their conflict as well as their subsequent resolutions. Some chose to refuse the truth and stay ignorant. Others embraced their flaws and rose even higher, leaving behind their old shells to blossom anew. Lucius made a promise to himself and the wide universe above: no matter wherever he went next, he would always remember the flowers of Francia. “How about you, my starry audience?” Lucius said to the space up high. “Did you enjoy this tale?” >[Virtual Goddess of the Wired smiles warmly and says that they hope Karolus and his people will thrive in the following years to come. The Star loves stories about perseverance and the pursuit of good, even when the world is ever so cruel in its trials]< >[Priestess of the Lily Tree agrees with the Goddess. Stories with happy endings are rare nowadays, especially when it comes to dimensions selected to host the players. The Priestess hopes that you will continue to help others realize the potential inside them]< >[Sinister Interdimensional Bureaucrat isn’t all too pleased with this ending. Their employers wished to sow more discontent and resentment in the world’s populace, and you have not lived up to the evil they know the gentleman is capable of. Unless your performance in the next round is more to the Bureaucrat’s liking, then they will have to reconsider offering you a favorable contract]< >[Angel of Mercy shrugs and says that it was okay, although a bit too sappy for their liking. Still the Star liked seeing all the cool battles and the interesting way you fight. As long as they get to see the gentleman dominate his foes, then they don’t
