Chapter 6: An Unexpected Event Novaris was a city that sheltered what remained of humanity. In this era, very little technology had survived, making it impossible to know the city's exact population. The city was encircled by massive walls, forming a perfect ring around it. They had been built from stone reinforced with sections of iron. and were often easily breached by powerful monsters; After all, these walls had suffered a great deal of damage over the course of hundreds of years and they no longer possessed the glory they once had. More importantly... Those who had once protected them were gone. Beyond the walls lay the Outside World. At least, that was what the people of Novaris called it. An unknown, mysterious land from which the Monsters emerged. And the only people who held the key to exploring it... Were the Hunters . Speaking of them... Deep within the forests surrounding Novaris, a Hunter stood atop a stone watchtower. He wore the standard dark blue uniform. Three golden stars rested upon his shoulders. A golden spyglass was raised to his eye as he stared into the distance. Anxiety consumed his face. "this is a disaster..." Where he looked, there was a variety of raging monsters coming toward him "I have to report this!" Without hesitation, he condensed everything he had witnessed—the size of the horde, the Monsters' appearances, and their Bloodlines—into an emergency report addressed to the Outer Garrison Headquarters. He quickly released his trained messenger pigeon, sending the report racing toward the city. Then he abandoned the tower himself, retreating as fast as possible. One of the reasons Novaris had survived countless Monster Tides over the centuries was its network of scouts scattered throughout the Outside World. Bill was one of those scouts. Most people dreamed of glory when they became Hunters. They imagined heroism. Sacrifice. Fame. Bill on the other hand had chosen a different path.. The moment he became a Hunter, he volunteered to join the scouting corps. "Who needs a bouquet of flowers if they're dead?!" That had been his response when people questioned his choice. "I've been a scout for seven years, and I'm still alive." He would always grin before adding, "As for the others... well, you can always visit the Hunters' cemetery if you want to see them." As Bill galloped away on horseback, the Monsters reached the base of the stone watchtower. Only minutes later, he arrived at Novaris's outer walls. His message had already reached the guards. Preparations were underway. "Good work, Bill." A deep voice welcomed him. "Head to the observation posts and reinforce the soldiers as quickly as possible." The speaker was Gadius , the Shield of the North . He served as the supreme commander responsible for every defensive wall protecting Novaris. "This is only my duty, Supreme Commander." Bill answered smoothly. Inside, however... Whew... I barely made it. I watched those Monsters smash a stone tower to pieces. I'd rather not imagine myself still being inside it. The moment he finished speaking, Bill disappeared into the city's defenses. "Coward." The comment came from another officer standing beside Gadius. His name was Evander . Four golden stars gleamed proudly upon his shoulders. He looked every bit as brilliant as they did. Neatly combed blond hair. Flawless pale skin. Dark eyes that occasionally shimmered with strange flashes of color. For the past ten years, he had served as Gadius's right-hand man. He disliked the fact that someone of Bill's status constantly fled battle under the excuse that his abilities "weren't suited for combat." Gadius remained silent for a moment before answering calmly. "There's no need to think that way." "Even if he's a coward in your eyes... Being a scout requires courage too, he's carrying out his duty as best he can." Evander listened quietly. He wasn't particularly convinced. Still, he kept his thoughts to himself. Gadius knew exactly why. His trusted lieutenant simply
