Evan stepped out of the restroom, his face still damp from the cold water. He had calmed down somewhat, but his mind was racing. Looking back, it had been his mistake to underestimate Liang Shen from the very beginning. Only toward the end had he realized just how dangerous and intelligent the man truly was. By then, it was too late to stop the plan. “Next time, I’ll be more careful.” But right now, he had more pressing concerns. The biggest one was the White Crane herself. Marie wouldn’t simply sit still while one of her employees was captured. She would almost certainly come to retrieve him. He had several ways to pressure her into dropping the request. What worried him more was the possibility that she might abandon Liang Shen and the pink-haired girl entirely and continue the investigation alone. She was more than capable of doing so. Just then, an officer approached him. “Sir, there are people here who want to meet you.” Evan already knew the answer. “The White Crane, I assume?” The officer nodded. “Yes, sir. But Leia from the Anomalies Enforcement Unit also wants to see you.” Evan narrowed his eyes. “The new recruit? What does she want?” The officer explained, “She mentioned something about suspicious activity in the Sierra District.” Evan continued, “Is it related to an Anomaly?” The officer shook his head. “No, sir. She believes it’s human activity.” Evan let out a tired sigh. “Tell her to write a detailed report of her findings and submit it. This matter is under our jurisdiction. After that, send her back to work. As for the White Crane… escort her to my office.” “Yes, sir.” The officer saluted and quickly left. Evan watched him go with a cold smile. Though he had failed to extract the information he wanted from Liang Shen, he still had plenty of cards left to play, especially since he had set something up in his office. With that thought, he turned and walked toward his office. ****** Sierra District S.E.C.T. Station, main hall. The moment he saw Marie, Liam quickly composed himself and offered a polite smile. “My, my… What an honor to see the White Crane in the flesh, standing before me.” He gently handed the small paper crane back to her. “I believe this little one belongs to you?” The paper crane fluttered from his hand and landed gracefully on Marie’s shoulder. Marie smiled. “Oh, why thank you. Liam, was it?” “That’s correct,” Liam nodded. “I assume you already knew my name by listening in on our conversation earlier.” Marie didn’t deny it. “I understand that it’s your job to handle Anomalies throughout the city. But you can rest assured that Seo Jun is perfectly safe.” “We’ll be the judge of that,” Liam replied smoothly. He turned his gaze toward the mutated revolver inside the glass display case, his expression calm but thoughtful. He had thoroughly read up on the White Crane Office and its members. One of them, after all, was classified as an Anomaly and was standing right in front of him. Fixers rarely came to an S.E.C.T. station in person unless the matter directly involved their Office. With only Marie and Seo Jun present, and knowing that Sandra, the member best suited for official negotiations but not combat, was absent, the situation became clearer. Liam deduced that they were on some kind of request in the Sierra District, and their Office had then done something to catch the attention of the S.E.C.T. The fact that Liang Shen, who usually went out on requests with them, wasn’t here meant one of two things. One, he was outside waiting. Or two, he was being detained. Liam continued calmly, “You’re here for Liang Shen, aren’t you?” Marie’s smile remained perfectly composed, but Liam caught the subtle shift in her eyes. “Oh?” she replied lightly. “What makes you think so?” “It’s obvious enough,” Liam said, turning to face her fully. “You don’t strike me as the type to visit a S.E.C.T. station for casual conversation.” On his way to the station earlier, he had noticed a commotion near Sierra Middle School.
