He wished he could forget the searing pain throbbing at the base of his right temple, and the sticky sensation of thick liquid coating his face as he lay flat on the asphalt. Even more, he wished he could ignore the revolting feeling that something, deep within his soul, was parasitizing his essence. But no. He had to forget who he was and where he was. Hardly had he regained consciousness when most of his senses were assaulted. The smell of sulfur, blood, and smoke attacked his nostrils. His ears were besieged by confused sounds: cries he couldn't understand and high-pitched, whistling screams that were anything but human. Every inch of his body hurt like hell, and he had a metallic taste in his mouth. He processed this deluge of sensory information in less than a second—more than enough to try opening his eyes. A blurry veil seemed to have settled over his vision; he could only see hazy silhouettes, random flashes of light, and an environment bathed in an incandescent atmosphere before his heavy eyelids closed again. A deep, panicked voice rang out somewhere behind him. "LIEUTENANT! CAN YOU HEAR ME?" "HE TOOK THE BLAST FULL FORCE, HE NEEDS HELP!" exclaimed another voice, more fluid but equally masculine. It was hoarse, as if its owner were on the brink of exhaustion. "Are we retreating then?" asked a female voice, just as tired, piercing through the ambient chaos. "More are coming and his fall was really violent". "No, they're already on us!" another female voice snapped. The tone of this voice was softer, calmer, and more pleasant to the man's ears. He forced his eyes open once more, succeeding only for a few seconds. Something—or several things—was approaching their position with irregular footsteps and an ominous hissing. "Maintain formation, I'll take care of him! Gazelle and Ondulé , stay at the point, but just focus on repelling attacks". " Ecaille , you'll handle the bulk of the attacks as rear support. I'll come back to back you up as soon as I'm done". "Understood!" the three other voices shouted in unison. Groaning in pain, the man rolled onto his stomach as the sound of footsteps indicated the soldiers—it seemed obvious they were soldiers—were moving into position. He squinted and felt, rather than saw, someone kneel beside him. "Lieutenant, don't move," the woman whispered. A hand, soft but firm, took him by the shoulder and turned him onto his back. Gently, it moved up to his face and caressed the spot that throbbed most painfully. The man stifled a shiver as the cold hand ventured over the area surrounding the obvious wound. "Head trauma," the woman muttered as a series of explosions and screams echoed behind them. "You've bled a lot. I'll make this quick". The hand withdrew from the bruised area. The man then felt the person kneeling at his head place both hands on either side of his face, and something—a kind of energy—began to gather around them. " Ihtura Ôru! (Relief of the night)". No sooner were these words spoken than the man let out a gasp of surprise. He felt as if his body were plunged into a pool of cold water, or rather a frozen substance that seemed neither liquid, solid, nor gas. The sensation was very strange, but above all reassuring, bringing almost immediate relief. The man reopened his eyes instantly, his vision now clear and sharp, and gazed upon the face of his savior. The first thought that came to his mind was how beautiful she was. Her complexion, illuminated by the fiery atmosphere, was a light chocolate. Her eyes, with black irises, were filled with tiny lights that gave the impression of small crystals shining in a subterranean cave. They were narrowed on her heart-shaped face, her fine, short locks hanging on each side as she leaned over him. She wore a half-open jacket and green military pants over a kind of tight white jumpsuit that went up to her neck. In this position, the man had an unobstructed view of the woman's chest, which did not bot
