The splashing of feet below blurred the reflected images of the beasts above. Wind Slice and Bolt of Lightning abilities cut through the air, but these creatures were just too fast. Images in the water dodged the elemental flurry. Too few of the attacks had found their mark. It was enough to keep some of the creatures at bay, however, and when they did latch onto one of Nik’s allies, they made themselves less mobile targets. With several having tried to take his friends already, that did seem to be the only method they used in their assault. So long as they kept hold of their rope when the beasts dug their claws in, then they could get through this. “One hundred more paces. Don’t stop moving!” Nik called out from his position in the lead. His people had done an excellent job keeping the pace up, even through being harried by what the system called “Tower Harpies.” Invisibility was a frustrating power to face. Even with being able to see their reflections below, it was like trying to fight while performing a cartwheel. Another factor that frustrated Nik was his inability to help anyone in the rear two-thirds of their line. He couldn’t get a straight shot at an enemy that far back without deviating from the course. As much as he hated that, he had to trust his friends to be capable of watching each other’s backs. Crushing pain squeezed briefly at Nik’s waist as the line yanked him back a few paces. He turned back to see that Eric had stumbled to the side. The warrior shouted as he fought at the straps that held Ryan to his back. The fae-dragon was clawing and flapping his wings to break away from his place secured to the human’s back. Blood rained on him. Their allies had loosed a barrage overhead as enemy fliers tried to strike at the fallen adventurer, and the resulting carnage bought Eric just the time he needed to cut the straps free. Ryan took to the black skies. Gas poured from his fanged lips as he flew. The cloud of poison grew to envelop the majority of the harpies. Empty holes carved through the green fog, leaving curls of gas in trails behind them. The little dragon had given them a way to see their enemies’ locations before launching himself into direct combat with a harpy. “Good boy, Ryan.” Nik threw out more blades of condensed and sharpened air to intercept several of the bat-like creatures. No matter how many they killed, however, more filled the sky to replace the ones they’d felled. With everybody back on their feet and moving forward, Nik shouted, “Fifty paces left.” Light flashed from behind. Then, in a single heartbeat, he was struck by a blast wave, a surge of intense heat, and the booming sound of an explosion. Without needing to look over his shoulder, he knew it was the fae-dragon’s handiwork. This was the same thing that had sent Nik turning through the air during their battle against the army of shadows. His teeth flashed an almost conspiratorial smile, and he thought, If that blast was any stronger than the one he accidentally hit me with, then Ryan just completely destroyed a good number of those harpies. Twenty paces away from their goal, Nik realized he had a problem. He couldn't stay behind to make sure everyone else made it through if he was still tethered to the front of the group. So, as he made the last dash to the stairs, he untangled the knot at his waist. Harper rushed past him and up the first steps. Wolf, ever at her side, followed after. But the lupine male paused at the base of the ascension to sniff at the air. He looked down at the reflective surface, and Nik followed his gaze to see multiple enemies shooting toward Harper above them. Wolf almost vanished. In the quickest burst of speed Nik had ever seen, the lupine had simultaneously cut the rope behind himself and leapt several times his own height over the former admin. Nik sent a blade of wind at one of the winged beasts as Wolf tackled an invisible enemy from the air. Claws dug into Wolf's chest as they crashed into the curved ra
