It didn't escape Nik's notice that no matter how many levels he gained, there had always been the potential on any given day that he'd run into something that was scarier than even he'd become. Always a bigger beast. It made sense that today would be the day that he'd have to face a living tunnel with razor-blade teeth on the inside and outside of its mouth. “Run faster! It's gaining on us!” he shouted. The slowest of the group were only a handful of steps ahead of him. He'd managed to keep up with the stragglers, even though his legs were by far the shortest. “My legs weren't built for speed or endurance, I can't keep up this pace for much longer,” David replied as he threw a bolt of electricity over Nik's head in the direction of the beast. That was the moment Nik was forced to dig his heels in to slow himself as the others had done just ahead of him. He almost ran into David, who'd already run into Doggy's fur-covered backside. The tunnel had opened up before them into a massive cavern. Unfortunately for them, the tunnel that they were in now, ended abruptly on the face of a flat drop. He racked his mind, searching for a solution. He could do something close enough to flying for a short time, but that wouldn't help anybody else. He doubted that his explosions or Eric's shield wall would be enough to stop anything that big. They needed to get out of the worm's way. Nik cut through the group to look at what lay before them. They only had moments left, but a plan formed in his mind. It was risky, but better than doing nothing at all. “Everybody step back!” he commanded as he raised his arm up to the side of the tunnel's edge. A rapid firing of multiple Wind Claw attacks burrowed into the earth. He shoved his arm into the deep furrow he'd created and gritted his teeth. The blowback from this was going to be painful. A full-powered Flame Blast unleashed a torrent of fire back through the hole and around his body. It tossed him back toward the others like he weighed no more than a bundle of twigs. The action created a crater within the rock wall, and widened the available standing space. The group piled into the space, crowding it with their numbers. Multiple sets of hands grabbed at Nik, pulling him into the space just as the great worm reached their location. An outward pointed tooth caught his calf, tearing an uneven slash across the muscle. Doggy's large bulk prevented him from getting off even that easy. The thunderworm's wide maw clipped the bear-sized beast's hip. As the head of the worm shot from the tunnel into open air, Doggy went with it. Nik moved. There wasn't enough time for a plan. He could only act. The capybeara was a large beast, and this wasn't going to be easy. He broke away from his friends’ grip and launched himself over the edge as they screamed after him and Doggy. It was a dive into near complete darkness. He could survive using the same method of controlled explosions that he'd used to reach the king of shadows, but saving Doggy was another matter. Nik sent bursts of flame from his feet to speed his own descent, and reached his hands out for the capybeara. He shot between the worm and Doggy and dug his claws into the edges of the level two companion's natural armor plating. Momentum had the two of them twisting through the air as they fell, and Nik waited until the worm reappeared behind him. Hard rock waited for them at the bottom; he only had one chance to get this right. With their rotation putting the giant beast past his vision, he pressed himself against the capybeara and shot a large Flame Blast from his feet. Their descent pivoted as Doggy and Nik slammed into the worm. The two of them rolled up its side as they bounced off of wet leathery flesh. Its smooth skin was slick with spined ridges set in regular intervals. He let go of Doggy. They each clawed at the worm, searching for purchase along its back. He reached for one of the spines. Pain only registered after feeling the weight of the impact.
