The feeling of unease from his violent nightmare carried itself over to the morning. Nik hadn’t gone back to sleep after waking in the middle of the night, and his body still felt only half-rested when the light filtered in through the doorway. Breakfast was an uninteresting piece of bread and a foul-smelling cheese that tasted better than its odor had led him to believe. The strong flavor was unusual but pleasant, and Nik asked Bonesy to thank the refugee who’d gifted it to his clan. Each of the members of his Lowerguard arrived as a group to check on him after the events of the previous evening had been relayed to them, and thank the tower, it turned out that after a good long sleep, Stics and Worik were entirely unharmed by their food-induced comatose states. “Well, I guess that means we’ve got some trainin’ to do, but first we have some initiates to bring into the guild. Duty before fun. And besides, they’re excited to get started,” Kath said with a smile. Light popped into existence with the notification of a guild message calling everyone to the guildhall for the morning’s ceremony. Nik nodded in return and closed the system window. “Alright, alright. Leveling a skill is a significant time investment, so it’s not like I was going to get it to level two this morning anyway. Let's go beat everyone else to the hall and see the people you’ve chosen.” Kath led the way with Nik coming after and the other two guards taking up the rear. There was already a small crowd starting to gather around the entrance of the guildhall, friends and family of those to be initiated having come to show their support, and a few of Candlelight's citizens who were just excited to witness the event for themselves. To Nik's surprise, there weren't only goblins but pixies and sprites as well. A smile lit Kath's face while she turned to see Nik's curious expression. “One of the pixies volunteered to be a member of the guard and to join the guild as well, a young man named Brethon Figbug,” she explained. A sparkle lit in his eyes, “Really? That’s amazing! Perfect, actually. We need to get as much integration as possible to help our people feel unified, especially after finding out about the effect that frostberries might have on the goblins. Once word of that spreads, people might get scared, and that’s the last thing any of us needs.” They made their way to the front where the initiates were already lining up to face the crowd. Goblins young and old stood at attention, awaiting his arrival, and to his surprise, he recognized more than one of them. Closest to him were two unfamiliar goblins, both wearing light armor. They were Upperguards from Brekk who’d helped the others to escape the swarming shadows. Then there was Brethon after them, hovering in place, and glowing with excitement. The two elderly figures that followed were locked in a focused conversation, and Nik was surprised to see either of them here. He addressed them each in turn as he approached. “Loffka? I didn’t know you were one of the refugees. I’m glad you survived; it would’ve been a great shame to lose a healer with your level of skill and experience. And Elder Dansa, I’m surprised you could get away from Terk and the others long enough to participate in guild activities.” The former leader of the circle of healers in Brekk Burrow, who still wore the robed garb of his profession, stepped forward. “I’m glad to have survived, my lord. It’s also good to see a former patient thrivin’ and growin’ even stronger to boot. Thank you for takin’ care of our people. I was hopin’ that as a member of your guild, I might start a new circle here. I have former students ready to join after me, if you’ll accept us.” Elder Dansa responded before he could. “I’m still spry enough to slip away from under Terk’s nose, and he’d be an incompetent fool to turn you away, Loffka.” “She’s not wrong. That would be foolish as it gets, and it would be a boon to Candlelight to have a circle of healers working with u
